Automation system extends the scope of traditional control systems to include all automation functions in a single operations and engineering environment so that plants/mills can run smarter.

ABB's IndustrialIT System 800xA has been widely embraced by customers in a variety of process industries since its introduction earlier this year During its first six months of release, more than 300 systems have been sold to customers all over the globe

IndustrialIT System 800xA provides new and existing ABB customers with a better way to achieve measurable productivity and profitability improvements.

System 800xA extends the scope of traditional control systems to include all automation functions in a single operations and engineering environment so that plants/mills can run smarter and better at substantial cost savings.

"The automation user community has reacted very favourably to the introduction of System 800xA; both new and existing ABB customers are using it to achieve continuous productivity improvements and extend their process control and enterprise visibility well beyond the traditional automation system scope," said Bob Hausler, vice president Industrial IT Systems marketing.

'System 800xA's unique integration capability, allows Customers to combine data from traditionally disparate automation-related applications into a single integrated information view in real time to facilitate business impactful decisions and actions to maximize productivity.

Further, System 800xA provides the capability to tailor information content and format to the user's job function facilitating faster navigation, assimilation, and decision-making." Customers from a variety of process industries, such as petrochemical, chemicals, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, pulp and paper, utilities, water, metals, mining, food and beverage, and many others have implemented System 800xA to extend their automation reach and improve the efficiency of their operations.

Companies/institutions such as Schering Plough Corp., Molson, Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd., Asia Pulp and Paper Co, Chinese Petroleum Corp, Statnett, (Norwegian National Grid Co), Bechtel National, OM Group, MosTeploEnergo (Russia), and Southern Illinois University (National Corn to Ethanol Research Center) are among those adopting System 800xA to achieve productivity improvements.

Many ABB customers have added System 800xA functionality to their existing ABB systems.

With System 800xA, customers have the ability to extend the automation reach of their present system to enjoy new levels of productivity.

It provides the flexibility to implement the functions these customers require today and the agility to add others as needs evolve, while utilizing their existing automation system as a foundation for continuous productivity improvement.

Customers from a wide variety of industries have extended their current ABB system to include System 800xA core functional areas such as asset optimization, production management, information management, control, operations, engineering and others to get the productivity results they need now, with the ability to continue to evolve their systems at a pace that suits their long-term needs.

"Consistent with ABB's Industrial IT philosophy, the new release of 800xA is fully backwards-compatible with ABB's installed base of systems such as Advant, MOD, Master, Harmony, and Melody," said Larry O1Brien, senior analyst, ARC.

"Naturally, ABB's first priority is to look after its installed base and provide a cohesive evolution path to its new technology while simultaneously preserving the investment of its clients.

It is a tough balancing act to follow, and one that has never been undertaken on such a large scale by any supplier, but ARC believes that ABB is performing this task at a level that exceeds the industry norm." Here are a few examples of recent System 800xA projects: Schering Plough is upgrading its facility located in Cork, Ireland with ABB's Industrial IT Extended Automation System 800xA.

The Schering Plough Brinny site, in operation for more than 25 years, manufactures Interferon alfa-2b used in the treatment of malignant melanoma, chronic hepatitis B and C, and other illnesses.

In order to meet the growing requirements for Interferon alfa-2b, Schering Plough (Brinny) will extend their facility to allow for non-interrupted production of the drug.

"This project will run over a number of years and Schering Plough is seeking a 'partner' as well as a project solution," said Mike Hennessy, Senior Project Manager, Schering Plough.

"ABB provided a price competitive solution using the latest technology which is easy to support and expand; and because of their pharmaceutical industry knowledge, ABB will be able to assist Schering Plough with future regulatory (FDA) compliance." The National Corn to Ethanol Research Center (NCERC) at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville (SIUE) recently chose Industrial IT Extended Automation System 800xA to run its pilot plant research facility focused on commercializing new technologies to improve the economics of fuel ethanol production.

System 800xA will be used to control the ethanol production process and help the NCERC achieve and document productivity improvements in this process.

Its single operations and engineering environment, integrated control and historian, and flexible navigation will provide the information management, visibility and control needed for this project.

Advancements in fuel ethanol production support rural development, environmental stewardship and national energy independence.

"As the control system within a new facility the System 800xA has proven to be very intuitive as well as easy to learn and use for our plant operators, engineers and system administrators.

This system offers numerous valuable features and has established itself to be a tremendous asset to our research facility," said Steven Ward, Research Engineer and NCERC.

Ranbaxy Laboratories is engaged in manufacturing and marketing generics, branded pharmaceuticals and active pharmaceutical ingredients and ranks among the top 10 generic companies globally.

Ranbaxy has selected ABB's Extended Automation System 800xA for their upcoming CLA/ CILIM facilities at Dewas, located in the Central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.

The 800xA system will offer Ranbaxy several features including the fully integrated Audit Trail and Batch Management software that facilitates conformance to FDA regulation of 21 CFR Part11, a mandatory requirement for exports to Europe and USA.

The Life Sciences industry in India is expanding fast with increasing exports to the west.

System 800xA will expand the existing Industrial IT plant-wide control functionality at the massive Bechtel River Protection Project for the Hanford Waste Treatment Plant near Richland, WA.

In 2002, Bechtel National chose ABB IndustrialIT as the plant wide control platform for the Department of Energy's (DOE) Hanford Waste Treatment Plant.

The original Industrial IT system integrated solution for Bechtel included hardware, software, consulting engineering services, on-site support and training.

Bechtel National has a $4 Billion, 10-year contract to design, build, and commission the world's largest radioactive waste processing plant.

CPC (Chinese Petroleum Corporation), one of the world's leading petrochemical companies, installed System 800xA in the No.

3 Aromatic process at the Linyuan Plant on the southern of Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

CPC was responsible for the programming and commissioning of the system, which is controlling a part process producing BTX, a material used by the fibre industry.

The new system is replacing outdated equipment.

CPC chose System 800xA because of its fast process execution time, its combination of sequence control and conventional control, and the easy way to program the system.

"800xA is very easy to program and handle.

It is much easier to work with than other systems - The training took two hours and that was enough! The operators also really like 800xA," said Song Shiang Chen, engineer, CPC Industrial IT System 800xA's unique integration capability extends far beyond the reach of traditional automation systems to achieve the productivity gains necessary to succeed in today's business markets.

The system integrates essential process control with production management, safety systems, smart instrumentation, smart drives and motor control, robotics, information management, asset optimization and documentation.

Its unique engineering environment manages one set of consistent data, for single-point entry, single-point change, and re-use across the plant.

Industrial IT System 800xA is part of ABB's award winning suite of integrated IndustrialIT solutions; these solutions address the challenges that automation customers face in today's global marketplace.

ABB's comprehensive IndustrialIT portfolio of products is focused on delivering productivity and profits to automation customers.

ABB's product strategy is for evolution through enhancement to protect customer investment.
