Compact DC drive from shrinks size by
25%
A DC drive with drastically reduced space requirements enables system integrators to fit the drive into small cubicles, for instance a standard 600mm Rittal cabinet.
A DC drive with drastically reduced space requirements has been launched by ABB The DCS 500-A5 is 25% smaller than its predecessor, with a compact design that makes it the market's smallest product in the 1000-2000 A range

Weekend fan parts search saved chipboard output
Tens of thousands of pounds worth of lost production at chipboard manufacturer Sonae Industria, Merseyside, has been saved by ABB Drives Alliance Partner Central Electrical.
This enables system integrators to fit the drive into small cubicles, for instance a standard 600mm Rittal cabinet.
Combined with the high power density and small dimensions of the DC motor, this makes the DCS 500-A5 well suited for any application where space is at a premium.
The smaller size has been achieved using a more efficient design with a smaller number of parts.
This contributes to improved airflow inside the drive, enabling the use of a smaller heat sink and a smaller fan.
It has also simplified manufacturing, enabling ABB to reduce the list price for this power range by approximately 5%.
The DCS 500 series comprises an extensive range of DC drives based on the same advanced design.
Modules are available as 6-pulse, 2- or 4-quadrant units from 25 A to 5150A, for supply voltages of 220-1000V AC.
Featuring function block programming, the drives can be configured for specialist applications such as paper winding or metal processing.
Each drive can be connected via a serial bus for multiple drive installations.
A wide selection of options for different requirements is available.
