Tennis bats demonstrate complex moulding cell

An Arburg product story
Edited by the Manufacturingtalk editorial team Jul 17, 2006

A complex production cell is built around an injection moulder and uses two-component injection moulding of a hard/soft combination, assembly and ultrasonic welding, which are all integrated.

The main attraction on the Arburg stand at the MSV 2006 in Brno, Czech Republic, will be a complex production cell built around an Allrounder 630 S.

From 18 to 22 September, Arburg will demonstrate its comprehensive project competence in Hall G1, Stand 71 over an area of 168m2, based on an extremely complex table tennis bat production system.

Moreover, the vertical Allrounder 175 V and a representative of the Allrounder 'Golden Edition' anniversary machine series will also be on show.

The spacious Arburg trade fair stand in Brno will also feature a demonstration of the Arburg host computer system, ALS, which enables continuous data flow between the machine and planning levels, allowing centralised control and documentation of the entire production process.

* Production cell for table-tennis bats - production of the Arburg table tennis bat comprises a number of steps: two-component injection moulding of a hard/soft combination, assembly and ultrasonic welding, which are all integrated in the production cell.

The cell is the result of a cooperation project between Arburg, Weber Formenbau (mould engineering), Herrmann Ultraschalltechnik (ultrasonic welding technology) and engineers Kiki Ingenieurgesellschaft (gripper technology).

At the centre of the system is the two-component Allrounder 630 S 2500-1300/150 with three-station rotary mould and Multilift H robotic system.

Each half of the bat is produced in a cycle time of approximately 23s.

A sliding table subsequently guides the two halves of the moulded part to the ultrasonic welding system, where they are joined to create the finished bat.

The finished table tennis bat is again removed from the ultrasonic welding system by the Multilift H robotic system and placed on the conveyor belt.

* Allrounder 'Golden Edition' anniversary machine - to celebrate the golden anniversary marking '50 years of Arburg injection moulding machines', Arburg is offering its customers a special gift: The Allrounder Golden Edition anniversary machine series, which consists of five high-performance Allrounders, each with fixed clamping force/injection unit combinations.

The Allrounder 'Golden Edition' features high-quality standard equipment at a very attractive price/performance ratio.

Both the modern 'Selogica direct' control alternative with touchscreen and the highly wear-resistant cylinders are designed to meet modern production requirements, and the new switching valve technology guarantees superior moulded part quality.

Impressive evidence of the attractiveness of the anniversary machine are the numerous customer enquiries with regard to additional equipment features.

For this reason, Arburg has decided to suitably expand the list of available options for the Golden Edition, opening up new fields of application for the anniversary machines.

New features include a second core pull and six heating circuits.

Thus, complex moulds can now be used in conjunction with the Golden Edition, which is of particular interest with regard to the larger anniversary machines.

At the International Engineering Exhibition in Brno, an Allrounder 470 C Golden Edition with a clamping force of 1500kN and a size 400 injection unit will be presented, which features maximum shot weights of up to 232 grams of polystyrene.

The exhibit will produce a stacking box during the exhibition.

* Vertical Allrounder 175 V - the third exhibit in Brno will be the fully-hydraulic Allrounder 175 V with a stationary vertical mould clamp, which was premiered at the Fakuma 2005.

This vertical machine has 125 kN of clamping force and can be equipped with either 30 or 70 series injection units, which can be used centrally or also in the parting line.

Designed as a generous free-space system, this fully hydraulic machine is ideally suited for the encapsulation of inserts.

The fully-hydraulic, vertical Allrounder 175 V 125-70 will be exhibited without a mould in Brno in order to provide the best possible impression of its generously dimensioned design.

* About Arburg - Arburg, a German machine construction company, is one of the leading global manufacturers of injection moulding machines for plastics processing with clamping forces between 125kN and 4,000kN.

Fields of application are, for example, the production of plastic parts for motor vehicles, communications and consumer electronics, medical technology, domestic appliances and packaging.

The product range is completed by robotic systems, complex projects and other peripherals.

Arburg's operations are coordinated by an integrated management system and are DIN EN ISO 9001 and 14001 certified.

Arburg is represented in a total of 70 countries - in all the major plastics markets - with a comprehensive on-site sales and service network.

Some 1,950 employees share in Arburg's success worldwide.

Production is carried out by approximately 1,650 employees, exclusively at the parent factory in Lossburg (Germany).

A further 300 employees work at the 22 subsidiaries and representative offices.

In 2006, Arburg is celebrating '50 years of Arburg injection moulding machines' throughout the world and is presenting the Allrounder Golden Edition anniversary series.
