Fastener insertion automated in the die

A PEM Europe product story
Edited by the Manufacturingtalk editorial team Apr 21, 2008

PEM will be showing its Pemserter in-die fastener feeding system and an automatic press for placing self-clinching fasteners at the UK's MACH 2008 machine tool exhibition.

PEM Europe will be showing its PEMserter in-die fastener feeding system at MACH 2008, which eliminates secondary costs associated with adding the fasteners after power press operation.

PEM Europe will also show its Pemserter Series 3000 autoamtic fastener insertion press, which inslls slef-clinch fasteners some 30% faster, when comapred with earlier machines.

* In-die fastener feeding system - The Pemserter in-die fastener feeding system eliminates the secondary operations typically required for fastener insertion.

It therefore reduces overall labor costs, improves part quality and dramatically improves product throughput said PEM Europe.

Benefits of using the Pemserter in-die fastener feeding system are as follows.

* Increased productivity.

* Increased quality.

* Cost effectiveness.

* Reduced inventory/WIP.

* Reduced manufacturing lead times.

The system can be configured to feed nuts, studs, and/or standoffs for multiple or single insertions, generally matching the stamping press rate.

PEM Europe told manufacturingtalk that the system interfaces with the die (press tool) and the press with surprising ease.

The Pemserter system uses multi pin twist lock connectors so it is virtually 'plug and play'.

All that is needed to operate the system is a standard 110V receptacle and shop air.

Other advantages are that the standard tooling is in-press removable and can insert fasteners into complex workpieces generally considered inaccessible.

Tooling can be customised.

During operation the operator is guided through the process by the touch screen operator interface and the on-line library of fault/help screens.

The main features of the Pemserter in-die fastener feeding System are as follows.

* Can be easily moved from press to press.

* In-press removable tooling can be easily removed for maintenance.

* Easy interface with existing press controls.

* Touch Screen operator interface.

* Self-diagnostics with extensive library of help screens.

The complete Pemserter in-die fastener feeding system consists of the die tooling, fastener-feeding system module, the die-sensing module, and the support needed to make every project a success, said PEM Europe.

* All-electric Series 3000 press for inserting self-clinching fasteners - the new Pemserter Series 3000 automatic fastener-installation press has a machine cycle time of up to 30% faster than traditional systems to deliver comparable productivity gains when installing self-clinch fasteners.

Full servo electromechanical actuation technology provides significant improvement in operating consistency, improved reliability, increased efficiencies, and minimised maintenance.

PEM Europe said that the Series 3000 press introduces 'clean' technology - it does not use hydraulics or pneumatics - and installs all types of self-clinching fasteners rapidly, accurately, and permanently in thin-metal sheets.

The electromechanical servo drive optimises ram function to achieve ideal and repeatable speed and force for proper fastener installation.

The features of the Pemserter Series 3000 press are as follows.

* PC-based programming interfaces with all Windows operating platforms for job versatility and customization.

* Menu-driven touch-screen controls.

* Descriptive screen alerts.

* On-screen multi-media instructional video for user-friendly operation and quick learning.

* Data logging capabilities allow for performance monitoring.

* Patented Lightstrem Operator Safety System continuously safeguards by ensuring ram force is applied only to fasteners.

The Series 3000 press is designed with a 610mm throat depth, runs at unprecedented cycle rates and can realise a ram force up to 71.2kN.

PEM Europe said that the press can be operated remotely through networking.

The press is CE certified.
