Variable speed drives improve speed and
position

Variable speed drives offer the advantages of controlled start up, overload protection, reduced mechanical wear, as well as improved speed and positioning capabilities in many applications.

Based on proven technology from AC Technology, a member of the Lenze group, the new 'smd' drives have been developed for engineers and designers who have long been aware of the benefits of fitting a variable speed drive in a power transmission system, but, the cost and complexity of fitting variable speed drives ruled them out Now, they are a viable option and offer the advantages of controlled start up, overload protection, reduced mechanical wear, as well as improved speed and positioning capabilities in many more applications

Geoff Spear, Marketing Manager at Lenze UK explains "Lenze are well known in the marketplace for a wide range of power transmission products from basic components to complete motion control solutions such as advanced servo systems.

The new smd drive fits into the range as a truly universal product, specifically designed to meet the growing European demand for practical and affordable solutions to more basic AC motor control situations.

Typical examples include any type of cost sensitive industrial and commercial machinery from food packaging and processing to conveyors and leisure equipment.

In higher power applications such as pumps and fans, the energy saving aspect of drive control is also enhanced by the smd through low purchase costs and hence shorter payback periods.

Units with a range of power ratings from 0.25kW to 22kW were introduced at the launch along with international voltage models to boost European export sales." Tony Pickering, European General Manager for AC Tech explained that by using AC Tech innovations in the smd design, "Lenze have been able to address sectors of the market that would not have previously used AC drives thanks to its suitability for simpler motor control applications.

For example, the drives feature a removable memory chip and desktop programming module.

This can cut programming and service time by 90% when used with Lenze PC based programming software, making them the ideal solution for both OEM manufacturers and systems integrators." Thanks to the memory chip, the smd drive is ready-to-run straight from the box, pre-programmed with a series of useful factory settings.

Simple controls on the front of the drive are provided for speed adjustment and basic programming.

The smd drive will also perform advanced functions as part of its standard operating software which include adjustable slip compensation to increase the accuracy of speed holding with changing loads, voltage boost to improve dynamic response and DC injection braking to bring high inertias to a stop.

The smd drive is now available from the Lenze Stockline catalogue in the UK and from all Lenze distribution points throughout Europe.

Product launches are being held back-to-back across Europe and then on into other major markets across the world.

The events include comprehensive product training for sales and technical support teams.

Large stocks are also now in place to ensure the smd product is effectively introduced and supported worldwide.

Lenze provide both technical support and international product acceptance for UK built machinery that incorporates the smd and is exported. Request a free brochure from Lenze-ACTech ...
