Special Mircona toolholders and inserts have been supplied to Parmeko in just four weeks by Advanced Carbide Tooling for small-diameter deep face-grooving on high-performance proportional solenoid housings.

Producing the solenoid housings consistently had proved particularly difficult, as they require an annular groove 16.3mm deep, 21.85mm OD and 12.05mm ID with an overall tolerance of 0.05mm.

The material is a special magnetic alloy supplied as 26mm diameter bar.

To perform this work ACT supplied special Mircona toolholders with a 16mm square shank, 17mm reach and 21mm dedicated diameter insert support blade.

The flush-fitting insert top clamp -- a design feature throughout the Mircona range -- allows good swarf removal and effective lubrication, ensuring consistent, accurate machining.

The face grooving is performed with a main cut and two finishing cuts using a feed of 0.1 mm/rev and a surface speed of 180 m/min on an Index ABC machining centre.

Total cutting time is 83 sec, of which the face grooving takes 20 sec.

Each insert produces 150 parts.
