Changing from a conventional metal-cutting compound to vegetable-based SafeCut lubricant has brought increased tool life, cleaner components and fewer rejects at Brin Engineering.

The North Yorkshire manufacturer of multi-turned parts has used SafeCut for the last 12 months for tapping and threading Inconel, aluminium and stainless steel components, mainly for glass, chain and food manufacturing machinery.

When the mineral-based compound was used, material frequently stuck to the tool, particularly when tapping aluminium, causing tool breakage and damaged components.

This does not occur with SafeCut, according to managing director Paul Burns.

The SafeCut also leaves components far cleaner than before, and it has been economical and easy to use, he says.

The lubricant has been supplied in 400ml aerosols, so it can be applied direct from the can or sprayed into a container and applied by brush, which is the method the company prefers.

SafeCut is supplied by Advanced Carbide Tooling in aerosols, 250ml bottles with nozzles and five-litre containers.
