A new type of insert has been introduced by Mircona to counter problems associated with parting-off and grooving sticky and work-hardening materials, small-diameter workpieces and thin-wall tube They are available in the UK from Advanced Carbide Tooling

The new MA inserts have been designed specifically to overcome machining problems such as work-hardening and edge build-up encountered with materials such as low-carbon steels, soft non-ferrous metals, austenitic and duplex stainless steels, high-temperature alloys and acid-resistant steels.

The improved performance has been achieved by including a very positive rake angle at the centre of the cutting edge.

The corners of the insert also have much greater edge strength and a less pronounced positive geometry than usual.

These features result in longer insert life and well-controlled watch-spring swarf.

The inserts can be used for internal or external radial grooving, axial grooving, sideways turning and parting-off.

They are available in 3mm or 4mm widths with neutral, 5deg or 10deg approach angles.

Feed rates from 0.07 to 0.15mm/rev are recommended.
