Wire EDM adds competitive gain
With EDM wire cutting, especially with the Agie cut Evolution and Agie tron Innovation machines, Christian Dunkel ocquired a decisive competitive advantage in jig and fixture manufacture.
Telford-based Sprint recognised that to continue to grow and compete with lower cost global competitors it needed to invest in some of the highest performance machinery available to cut lead times.
To reach this goal, the company has just completed a GBP 185,000 investment programme at the heart of which is the Agie MONDO STAR 50 CNC diesinking system.
The Agie MONDO STAR 50 has been instrumental in helping Sprint halve lead times for many projects.
Sprint_s eagerness to harness the Agie MONDO STAR's CNC system and its ability to run 'lights out' has allowed Sprint to greatly increase capacity through reduced lead times.
For example, it has recently produced dies for a chrome-plated gear knob for the new Jaguar, a job that saw lead times cut from eight to only four weeks by the Agie MONDO STAR.
The Agie MONDO STAR system facilitates 2D, 3D and complex cavities to be executed with ease.
All X, Y, Z and C axis are freely programmable, allowing complete flexibility to the EDM process.
With a control system free of machine code and a fully automatic 5-position toolchanger, all the technology is complete, providing Sprint Tool and Die with reduced customer lead times.
The design of the machine also gives the toolmaker excellent access to the worktable, while the Windows-based operator interface has helped Sprint's toolmakers learn to use the MONDO STAR's flexibility with a minimum of effort, while the 500kg workpiece capacity allows it to machine larger moulds than previously possible.
Sprint managing director Ian Amos said the key factors in choosing the MONDO STAR 50 were its excellent price:performance ratio, its ease of operation, backed by Agie's reputation in EDM.
"With the MONDOSTAR we can run a 24 hour operation that will allow us to halve our turnaround and produce moulds of the highest accuracy much more competitively," said Mr Amos.
