EDM wins for racing car component maker
Mannesmann Sachs, a manufacturer of specialist, short run automotive components for Formula 1 cars and prototypes, has invested in the latest Agie EDM machine tools for prototyping and production.
They are equipped with Agie's IPG-V generator (Intelligent Power Generation - Vertex) - previously only available on Agie's state-of-the-art, duo-wire Vertex wire machines.
Specific customer benefits available from the IPG-V generator include the following.
* Customised performance - Teccut - o ensure ease of use and optimised EDM performance the Classic machines have Agie Teccut capability.
Teccut technology enables the most effective, and efficient, pulses to be selected according to individual workpiece variables (workpiece height, shape, material, surface quality and accuracy required, etc) - and generates the most appropriate cutting technology from an extensive database of pulses to ensure that customer performance requirements are met.
Teccut technology is powerful and productive.
It can for example - not only reduce the number of trim cuts required to achieve the final desired workpiece machined characteristics - it can, in some instances, eliminate them altogether - thereby saving time and costs.
* Controlled process reliability - field programmable gate arrays (FPGA) - part accuracy and surface quality are affected by conditions in the spark-gap.
FPGA technology ensures that these conditions are closely and continuously monitored and measured in 'real time' and fed-back - to ensure that the original machining objectives are achieved.
* Specific examples include the following.
1 - Advanced Wire Offset (AWO) which compensates for wire wear and the influences of flushing during the machining process in order to ensure that high contour accuracy is maintained.
2 - Wire Bend Control compensates (in real time and automatically) for wire deviations that occur when EDM machining tapered and stepped workpieces etc - and therefore enables cutting speeds to be maintained without compromising accuracy and/or surface finish.
3 - Dynamic Corner Control is similar to the above - and ensures optimum results when machining corners and internal radii.
4 - Automatic Power adjustment occurs via Variocut which monitors the changing workpiece conditions, i e, steps, openings, etc, adjusting power accordingly to maintain optimum cutting speeds and performance.
* eCut technology - Classic machines have eCut technology which enables the use small diameter wires (0.1 to 0.15mm) to maintain high cutting speeds and achieve superior accuracy and homogeneous surface finishes - especially when machining contours and tight radii.
Furthermore the use of small diameter wires - reduces the build up of debris/ deposits on the workpiece - which in turn reduces the number of trim cuts that may be required as well as having a marked effect on filter and resin consumption.
In combination with the IPG-V generator - the new Agievision 5 control improves performance and productivity.
* Agievision 5 control - the Agievision control is simple and easy to operate - and uses familiar Windows menus, icons, etc Specific productivity-enhancing functions and features include the following.
* Easywork generates the optimum EDM machining technology and sequences based on simple operator inputs concerning workpiece dimensions, characteristics and results required.
* 3D set-up ensures accurate workpiece positioning in the work area determined by the wire and a touch probe.
* Workmodel takes the hassle out of repeat and recurring machining tasks by filing them as models/templates which can be accessed and modified in the future.
* Formalcheck and Graficheck ensure that data input (via the operator) is correct and complete - and that machining operation is visualised (3D and 2D simulation).
Classic machine design and build - Classic machines have a 25kg wire spool capacity to enable long, unattended EDM machining operations to be undertaken.
Features such as Agiejet (reliable wire threading) provides customers with improved process reliability (even during lights-out operations) - and is vital for machining complex jobs with several different contour requirements or for multiple jobs to be machined in one set-up.
All Classic machines are equipped with a universal clamping frame designed to handle multiple machining applications - and obviating the need for customers to invest in additional (expensive) tooling.
The Classic machines are well designed, are easy to operate and are ergonomically sound.
Good and easy access to filters, wire cutting blades, nozzles, power supplies etc ensure fast replacement and minimal downtime.
The machine's control console features a large LCD screen for improved visibility.
2 x USB ports and a separate unit for CDs and DVDs help optimise data exchange.
* Classic specifications are as follows.
Classic V2: X; Y; X axes - 350 x 250 x 256mm.
Classic V3: X; Y; Z axes - 500 x 350 x 426mm.
U/V axes: +/-70mm.
Maximum taper angle: 30 deg/100mm.
Maximum workpiece weight: 450kg (V2); 800kg (V3).
Cutting speed: 300mm2/min.
Surface finish: Ra 0.2 micron (Ra 0.1 micron with SF Module).
