The retrofit of an Anilam 4200T CNC control system has given a new lease of life to an ageing Webster and Bennett vertical turning lathe at Vector International in Port Talbot.

The retrofit of an Anilam 4200T CNC control system has given a new lease of life to an ageing Webster and Bennett VTL at Vector International in Port Talbot "Because the old control had blown, it was a case of either buying a replacement machine or having a control retrofit," says Dave Lewis, head of manufacturing at the company that supplies precision components to the oil and gas industries, in particular

"Retrofitting the Anilam system was a far more cost-effective and quicker solution," he adds.

Primarily used for the production of hubs and flanges, the VTL's retrofit programme was carried out by CSD Controls (UK), an Anilam-approved CNC retrofitter.

After assessing that the machine's drives, motors and overall condition were of good standard, "it was a straightforward case of wiring in the new control and 'tidying up' the machine," says CSD's Colin Munn.

The project took around 10 working days.

With 14 inch CRT colour screen, the Anilam 4200T boasts G code input with full text editor for cut, paste, search and replace, for example, plus interactive conversational G code help graphics.

Its user-friendliness is prompted by a full-screen editing and conversational help menu, and program utilities include create, delete/undelete, list, copy, rename and print.

Machining performance is maintained by the system's advanced DSP-2 motion control technology.

Having dealt with CSD on a number of occasions, Vector was not too concerned about the fact that this was the first Anilam system to be introduced at the South Wales site.
