Austempered ductile iron castings are finding wider application, following the encouragement of greater awareness of the process.

Austempered Ductile Iron (ADI) castings are finding wider application, according to an analysis by heat treatment specialists ADI Treatments Speaking from the factory in West Bromwich, UK, managing director Simon Day described the company's throughput in 2006 compared to 2004, "We have seen overall growth in our volume but are particularly pleased at the increased number of customers from the General Engineering sector, which now generates nearly 20% of our work compared to only 6% two years ago." Day noted, "The new business includes the Austempering of parts for textile and food processing machines, home, vehicle, and commercial security systems, steel making plant, conveyor chains, and defence components

Our success has been achieved by spreading the awareness of ADI and its capabilities in substituting for high cost materials, forgings and fabrications." The company believes that ADI offers potential benefits to many more producers and end users of high performance components.

Referring to another recent example, Day added, "Over the period we also developed our solutions for the wind turbine industry and this has led us to double our processing capacity." ADI Treatments carry out their heat treatment service in customised Austempering furnaces with controlled atmosphere and sealed quench technology.

Day and his team are happy to advise customers on the suitability of Austempered Irons and Steels for specific applications.
