The man who has taken on the challenge is Neil Jowsey, who has joined this fourth generation, £200m turnover family firm, from Scotts Miracle-Gro Company, the £3b DIY lawn and gardening products business where he was UK Sales Director and Deputy MD.
Neil is no stranger to family firms as the Hagedorn family still own a majority share holding in Scotts.
Neil brings his excellent retailing experience to Arco; before Scotts he worked for ASDA where he revolutionised their on-line catalogue 'Asda at Home' taking the division from nothing to £20m in a couple of years and before that, Mars.

Web site improves protective equipment ordering
A leading UK supplier of personal protective equipment and work place safety products has improved its Web site search facilities and added a thumbnail browse facility.
He is tasked with delivering the sales plan and marketing strategy that involves deciding which markets Arco is going to attack next and working on the company's offer.
He is also responsible for a team of 700 people and as a member of the Board will participate in the future strategic thinking for the business.
"The motivating factors in my life are success, achievement and winning" explains Neil and he admits to being interested in working for Arco for many reasons.
"Coming from a retail background, the multi-channel nature of the business attracted me first, as this plays to my strengths and experience".
"I'm very impressed with the team at Arco, the values the business is centred on and the strength of the Arco brand".
"And from a personal point of view the location is great - my family is now firmly settled in the North - and I love Hull - sailing used to be one of my a hobbies and I think the regeneration that is taking place in the city is very exciting".
Jo and Thomas Martin, Arco's Joint Managing Directors explained: "Neil has a wealth of retailing experience that our business can definitely benefit from".
"But, and just as importantly, he will help streamline our messages throughout the business, aligning the sales and marketing roles and ultimately ensuring our customers get an ever improving service from us".
The incumbent Sales and Marketing Directors, Bill Bramley and Peter Sleigh are both retiring - Bill in June of this year and Peter in 2008.
Neil hails from Sussex and now lives with his wife and three children in Harrogate.
He is keen on keeping fit, coaches children's cricket and has taken part in the National Indoor Rowing Championships - a challenge that he is undertaking again this year but this time with Thomas Martin.
