A GBP 200,000 investment in a plastics injection moulding cell, based on an Arburg 3600kN machine, will reduce order to production lead times for and independent UK moulder.

Independent UK technical moulder A K Industries (AKI) has just installed a GBP 200,000 manufacturing cell, based on a 3600kN (360 tonf) Arburg Allrounder 720-S injection moulding machine The cell includes dedicated tool mounting equipment and an ATM overhead robot

The robot gives quick, automated handling and positioning.

The Arburg Allrounder provides AKI with vital production flexibility in larger component sizes, accepting tools for a wide range of contracts.

The machine will help to ensure sufficient capacity to meet customer volume demand peaks and tool trial requirements.

Such an assurance of available capacity and of fast manufacturing turnround in the fiercely competitive FMCG marketplace is often the key to winning rather than losing an order, said AKI.

What is more, the new Arburg Allrounder 720-S is equipped with a 60mm bimetallic screw and barrel.

This was specified to suit the components and material types to be manufactured on the machine.

Materials to be processed on it initially will be polycarbonate, ABS and a polycarbonate/ABS mix.

The benefit of the screw size is that it facilitates a maximum injection pressure of 2500 bar and maximum shot weight of 723g.

Another feature of the equipment is its two hydraulic core pulling circuits.

They will enable tools to be run that incorporate complex features not in the 'line of draw'.

The machine has two cooling circuits in both the fixed platen and the moving platen.

Differential cooling can be beneficial to products requiring a highly polished, aesthetic finish to satisfy the demands of the public.

The tie bar distance of the machine is 720mm x 720mm and clamping force is 3600kN, specially upgraded by Arburg for AKI from the standard 3200kN Allrounder.

The new unit complements AKI's existing array of some 30 injection moulding machines from 60 to 4500kN (6-450 tonf), located in the 40,000ft2 air-conditioned manufacturing hall.

The hall is located on oa 60,000ft2 site at Rotherwas, Hereford.

All round, the new Arburg will prove a handy investment for AKI, a key part of its strategy for accommodating future growth.

So what lies in store for the future? The company is already supplying many of its technical mouldings through agreements and partnerships with Central European OEMs and subcontractors to open up exciting new market opportunities.

What is more, A K Industries will be aiming to use its Arburg Allrounder 720-S to mould high-performance materials for leading-edge applications in building products, defence, aerospace and medical equipment.
