Handy card shows new and old cable colours

An Amtech Power Software product story
Edited by the Manufacturingtalk editorial team Jul 29, 2004

UK cable colour coding has been harmonised with that of the rest of Europe and a handy, wallet-sized card shows all the new cable colours alongside the old colours for easy reference.

Amtech Power Software has distributed over 6000 Cable Colour cards free to Electrical Engineers and Contractors throughout the UK.

By now, most people in the industry will be aware that UK cable colour coding has been harmonised to bring us closer to the rest of Europe.

These changes, which were brought in by Amendment No.2: March 2004 to BS 7671:2001, will affect anyone involved in electrical design or installation.

Amtech has produced handy wallet sized cards which show the new harmonised cable colours alongside the pre-existing colours for easy reference.

The durable, plastic cards have proved very popular with steel manufacturer Corus Strip Products UK, who have commissioned 1000 cards for their staff.

John Spary of Corus, who requested the cards said, " Safety is paramount in our business and we could see potential confusion problems as engineers get used to the new colours.

We had started to issue our staff with similar information but when we saw these cards we thought how convenient they were.

The information is clearly presented and the cards are an ideal size for slipping into your pocket or wallet.

We have about 700 staff who will be affected by the new colours including electrical engineers, process control engineers, technicians, electricians, multi-disciplined team members and supervisors as well as safety staff.

Our intention is to issue one of these cards to anyone working on or near electricity who might be confronted with the two sets of colours." Amtech has been delighted with the response for the cards and has just ordered further stock.

They estimate sending out over 10,000 cards by the end of this year.

According to Ian Selinger, Amtech's Customer Support Manager, "Everything that improves safety within the industry is vitally important, and if it increases familiarity with the regs this is a bonus".
