At the UK's Plastics and Design Moulding 2008 show, Victrex will show the evolution of high performance thermoplastics such as a product for complex geometries and long flow lengths.

Victrex will show the benefits of its high-performance thermoplastics at PDM08, (Plastics and Design Moulding 2008) exhibition in Telford International Centre, shropshire, UK, April 15-17 Latest products include: APTIV VICTREX PEEK-based films; VICOTE Coatings; VICTREX PEEK 90HMF as well as composites and tape

The most recent additions to the VICTREX PEEK product family include the following.

* VICTREX PEEK 90HMF - designed for complex geometries with thin cross sections or long flow lengths where higher strength in a static or dynamic system is required.

There are two grades, VICTREX PEEK 90HMF20 and VICTREX PEEK 90HMF40, containing 20% and 40% of carbon fibre filler respectively.

These new products are based on Victrex's High Flow resin and use a unique technology that ensures the new grades retain all of the inherent properties of VICTREX PEEK, whilst adding stiffness, strength, toughness and durability.

* VICTREX PEEK 90HMF compounds - these deliver outstanding fatigue performance, strength, modulus, and toughness, while retaining the inherent properties of low creep, coefficient of thermal expansion and chemical resistance to aggressive environments of standard VICTREX PEEK grades.

Victrex said that they are ideally suited for the most demanding applications in the aerospace and automotive industries, or industrial machinery equipment.

* APTIV film - a range of innovative VICTREX PEEK polymer-based films, offering a unique combination of properties, including: high temperature capability; excellent chemical resistance; exceptional durability and scratch resistance; outstanding radiation resistance, superior mechanical properties, excellent barrier and electrical properties, all combined with the ease of processing inherent in a thermoplastic material.

APTIV film also offers hydrolysis resistance, high purity, good flammability without the use of flame retardants, low toxicity of combustion gases, with low moisture absorption, all in a versatile film format that is also FDA- and RoHS- compliant.

* Thermoforming - thermoplastic qualities of the film and the range of thicknesses available allow APTIV films to be thermoformed.

This efficient method of producing 3D components allows components such as housings and covers to be produced economically with minimal waste, from low cost tooling, consequently minimising capital expenditure.

Produced in both filled and unfilled crystalline and amorphous grades, all APTIV film is manufactured by Victrex at their new facility.

Co-located with the main Victrex facility in the UK and part of a fully integrated supply chain, the new line is dedicated to the production of APTIV film and has been designed to deliver the tightest tolerance, highest quality PEEK films available in the market.

* VICOTE coatings - when compared with traditional fluoropolymer coatings, Victrex said that these coatings are the ideal choice for automotive, industrial, consumer cookware, and food processing applications.

Tests show that the excellent scratch, wear, heat, and chemical resistance of VICOTE coatings can extend the life of applications by between 50% and 200%.

It also offers excellent adhesion to the substrate, negating the need for a primer during the coating process.

The ability to apply a VICOTE Coating without the need of a primer, and the ability to achieve very thin coatings all contribute to reductions in systems costs, said Victrex.

Victrex has two series of coatings: VICOTE Coatings 700 and 800 Series.

The 700 Series is a range of powders for electrostatic coating depending on the coating thickness required.

VICOTE Coatings 800 SERIES are new dispersions where thinner coatings are required or where difficult geometries must be coated and which have been formulated to enhance the properties of the pure VICOTE products.

A pure VICTREX PEEK-based dispersion (VICOTE 804) is also currently available.

The new 800 series dispersion products will enable customers to enter markets and applications that traditionally have been the preserve of fluoropolymers.

VICOTE Coatings are resistant to chemicals such as salts, water/steam, alkalis, acids, and aromatic hydrocarbons.

They are dishwasher safe and FDA food contact approved.

* UK coating facility - Victrex has established a new coating facility at its UK headquarters with capacity production already at an estimated 100 tonnes/year.

The technical team is responsible for the development of new dispersions and dry powder blends; the manufacture of dispersion products; coating selected parts using electrostatic powders coating and dispersion coating techniques; and application performance testing.

About the PDM show, global product manager at Victrex, Mark Maddern, said: "PDM08 is an ideal platform for Victrex to interact with and educate designers in the critical area of material selection".

He concluded: "Victrex passionately explores with customers and end users new applications for high-performance materials and continually looks for ways to expand its global technology expertise in areas such as market development, customer service, prototyping, and processing support.

Victrex is also committed to creating new business opportunities to further shape the future of the materials industry".

* About Victrex - Victrex plc is the leading manufacturer of high performance materials, including VICTREX PEEK polymer, VICOTE Coatings and APTIV film.

These materials are used in a variety of markets and offer an exceptional combination of properties to help processors and end users reach new levels of cost savings, quality, and performance.

The company is headquartered in the UK.
