A UK forging firm sought to link the supply of compressed air throughout its new and existing forge and chose an oil injected rotary screw compressor for reliability and low operating costs.

When Independent Forgings and Alloys (IFA) started to plan their new forge in Sheffield, UK, the company sought the best equipment and the know how to possible make the systems match their demands IFA is a specialist open die forging and ring manufacturer

The new forge required an uninterrupted compressed air supply for a 2 tonne hammer used to make the seamless rings.

The Company was also keen to link the supply of compressed air throughout the new and existing forge.

Airchannel proposed the installation of a CompAir L250 compressor.

This state of the art oil injected rotary screw compressor has a motor output of 250kW and an air output of 1,507ft3/min (43m3/min) at 7 bar.

It combines high performance, reliability and low operating costs, with ease of installation and servicing.

Advanced control technology allows the compressor to be linked, giving the IFA engineering manager compressor control from his desk-top PC.

The complete system can provide the compressed air for forging.

* Results - representing value over the complete life cycle of the equipment, Airchannel's has designed, supplied and installed an energy efficient compressed air system.

Airchannel told manufacturingtalk that it maintains excellent product support to meet IFA's demands and to compliment their two existing L250's, and L120SR (variable speed) air compressors.

Airchannel's system allows the compressor runs at optimum speed for the application through high efficiency drive systems; ensuring efficient power transmission with minimum drive losses.

Compressed air is piped into the factory and distributed around two different rings.

It powers all the hammers in the forge.

The new 2 tonne archform hammer is used for forgings of up to 750kg.

Speaking of his satisfaction with the results, Richard Chambers of IFA said: "The forges are full of activity, so we needed to partner a reliable and knowledgeable Company that could offer a complete turnkey solution to our compressed air supply.

We more than found this with Airchannel, who looked at what we needed and came up with a system that met our requirements exactly.

They also provide an after sales service that we can totally rely on, which is a great news for the future.".
