Compressed air system modernised
A furniture manufacturer's compressed air system failed, and selection of a new compressor by a supplier saved on energy costs and increased output by 12%.
When its old compressed air system failed, the UK's largest privately-owned provider of fitted kitchen, bedroom and bathroom furniture, contacted Airchannel to supply the most reliable, energy efficient compressed air system available The Symphony Group's plant in Rotherham produces some 600 worktops cut to size each day, a total of around 150,000/year

Redesigned CompAir compressors introduced
CompAir's redesigned L 90 kW to 132 kW oil-injected screw compressors feature increased air output and reduced parts' and maintenance requirements.
Rotary screw compressor provides reliability
A UK forging firm sought to link the supply of compressed air throughout its new and existing forge and chose an oil injected rotary screw compressor for reliability and low operating costs.
After 10 years, the overall workload had worn out existing air compressors, which had operated at least two shifts per day for five days per week.
"Quite simply, it had worn out," said David Bramhall, the group's engineering manager.
Apparently, CompAir and Atlas products were considered as replacements.
Symphony's engineers required a detailed appraisal and understanding of Airchannel's suggested system, a CompAir L75SR variable speed unit, before installation.
Airchannel told manufacturingtalk.com that it analysed performance data of the old unit and compared it with the energy 'footprint' of the new system.
In this way, Airchannel was able to positively demonstrate an energy reduction if the CompAir unit was selected.
Impressed by the energy performance, and recognising the productivity benefits that the new machine would deliver, Bramhall accepted the proposed integrated compressed air system.
* Air output increased - the L75SR has a three-phase SR drive that increases the output of air (when compared with the older model) by 12%.
The compressor has an increased protection class of IP55 meaning higher reliability for the end user, even in polluted areas, said Airchannel.
The unit has secured access (maintenance access only).
The old system had to be run with external timers to ensure the compressor was running when production was required, whereas the CompAir Delcos 3100 has a timer stop/start facility inbuilt.
* Efficiency - "Efficiency is everything to us.
We don't like to waste time or material resources; the new compressed air system provided significant savings on energy, and we are delighted with the results," said Bramhall.
CompAir's Assure warranty, coupled with the Airchannel Service Support Agreement has given Symphony total budget control of their compressed air costs for years to come.
