The UK's leading independent contract honing specialist, Apperley Honing, has launched its pre-coat filtration plant to the precision engineering market Designed to eradicate the loss of precision associated with the build-up of honing and grind-up sludge in cutting oil, the new filter plant overcomes the shortcomings of the majority of incumbent filtration systems by combining speed and precision without impacting on cost

Business expands on difficult honing jobs
An increasing proportion of a honing subcontracter's work is for complicated one-off projects which require innovative thinking when faced with awkward parameters.
Retrofittable honing tools improve metal cutting
A range of honing tools that can be retro-fitted to existing honing machines improve metal removal rates, reduce running costs and importantly eliminate the invasive honing squeal.
Charles Sanders, Managing Director, commented: "Using a consistent supply of clean cutting oil eliminates the variable, that dirty oil introduces to honing, grinding and spark erosion processes.
The net result is more control and thus greater speed and precision in achieving desired finishes." The Apperley F012D Filter plant is particularly aimed at medium- to high-output honing, grinding and spark erosion operators.
It provides users with a continuous filtration process that is the perfect alternative to paper band filters, which although relatively inexpensive have a tendency to be unreliable; and the more costly and disruptive centrifuge methods.

Cheltenham-based Apperley Honing, a specialist honing company, has been awarded 'Investors in People' status after a year-long application procedure.
Travelling column VMC has dual-pallet indexing
Vertical machining centre with a travelling column design and integrated rotary dual-pallet indexing system provides higher levels of productivity and output and efficient workpiece loading/unloading.
The machine has been developed to filter particles down to 3 micron in size.
Sanders continued: "With hands-on knowledge of running a large honing operation, we've been in the ideal position to deliver a solution that provides a cost-effective alternative that will help companies circumvent the problems of 'dirty' cutting oil." Established in 1963, and now a leader in its field, Apperley Honing itself runs a large subcontract honing operation with 20 varieties of honing machine that can hone diameters from 3mm to 750mm, in lengths of up to 15 metres.
The F012D filter plant is designed to optimise plant performance.
It is linked to scavenge tanks and pumps fitted to machinery on the shop floor to provide an uninterrupted supply of clean oil.
As it is more efficient than the paper band/settlement tank system, and does not dictate the downtime of centrifuges, it is perfect for high capacity operations - particularly when running shift systems - and is especially beneficial for round the clock shifts.
Using diatomaceous earth, as the filter medium, coated to 12 polyester meshes, the F012D is extremely efficient in terms of the cost of consumables, low maintenance and reduced downtime.
Sanders added: "There are many companies that do not use filtration methods - but this is at the expense of wear and tear on machinery as well as the aforementioned loss of precision and control." Apperley Honing is the UK's largest independent specialist contract honing company.
Established in 1963, the company has a range of clients in the motorsport, aerospace and pharmaceutical sectors.
As market trends have changed, Apperley has evolved by offering its plant consultancy services to the global machining community, using its specialist knowledge to develop and design bespoke honing machinery and processes for its clients.
Charles Sanders is Managing Director of the company.
