BUS converter modules offer a fresh approach to high efficiency distributed power systems by using an innovative open loop DC step-down conversion design.

Astec Power Launches the ALQ25 Series; A New Range of Isolated 300W DC/DC Bus Converters in Quarter-Brick Format Designed to Drive Multiple Rail Point-of-Load Devices with up to 96% Efficiency The ALQ25B50 is an isolated 300W bus converter module delivering 12VDC at 25A Astec Power has used an innovative open loop DC step-down conversion design with a patented soft-switching push-pull topology, coupled with a very fast switching frequency of 800kHz, to ensure an especially high power efficiency of up to 96%

This novel approach also means that the output exhibits purely resistive behaviour, thus improving power supply stability characteristics.

Output line regulation is 10.25 to 13.6VDC (12VDC nominal).

Input range is 42 to 53VDC (48VDC nominal).

The new ALQ25 series addresses two of the most pressing problems for power systems designers today.

Ever-increasing power requirements in many electronic applications has led to increased heat dissipation problems; and the reduction in working voltage levels coupled to an increase in the number of voltage rails required makes voltage rail regulation ever more difficult.

These problems can be addressed by the use of a Distributed Power Architecture (DPA) approach.

However, conventional approaches to (DPA) may suffer from an efficiency - as well as cost - penalty resulting from a 2-stage regulation process.

Astec Power have designed the ALQ25B50 to avoid this problem, by optimising the device to deliver isolated power at very high efficiency (96%) to a new generation of Point-of-Load (POL) voltage regulators, which themselves operate at around 90% efficiency.

Particularly in multiple rail applications, this approach has major benefits for cost, ease of board layout and power dissipation.

The new ALQ25B50 modules come with several useful features, including input over voltage protection and under voltage lockout with hysteresis to prevent false triggering at low input voltages, as well as output over current and over temperature protection.

The devices also offer a choice of either positive or negative logic control for the remote on/off pin.

As an added convenience, designers can select models with pin lengths of either 3.7mm or 5mm.

Designed to operate in ambient temperatures from -40degC to 85degC, the devices meet basic insulation requirements as well as industry standards for safety and performance.

These robust modules have a calculated Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) of more than one million hours.
