Emerson Network Power's new generation of switching power supplies from Astec Power feature sophisticated digital management capabilities.

Emerson Network Power announced that its new generation of switching power supplies from Astec Power featuring sophisticated digital management capabilities have been selected from a field of hundreds as a finalist for this year's EDN Innovation Awards Instituted in 1990, the Innovation Awards honour the people, products and technologies that have shaped the electronics industry over the past year

The Astec iMP Series AC-DC Switchers represent a significant advancement in technology by offering a range of hardware modules that give designers the ability to tailor solutions precisely to their individual needs with single, dual, and triple output modules in power ratings from 600W to 1500W.

Modules can be configured in a selection of four customizable iMP cases accepting input voltages from 85VAC to 264VAC or 120VDC to 350VDC.

Cases can accommodate up to seven individual modules with a choice of outputs ranging from 2VDC to 60VDC - giving designers literally millions of combinations that meet appropriate agency requirements without further certification.

"In addition to having 50 percent higher power density than previous generation products, this new breed of switching power supply uses integrated digital capabilities to provide smart communication and programmable control features that will enable designers to precisely fine tune power for their needs throughout the development and manufacturing process," explained Astec product marketing director Chris Jones.

"The easy-to-use microprocessor interface allows designers to make real-time adjustments to a host of parameters including: voltage, current limit, fan speed, output sequencing, over voltage set points, and more.

In spite of the advanced feature set, designers should find this new digital generation of intelligent switching power supplies to be price competitive with existing technology," according to Jones.

"The advancements that distinguish the finalists in the annual EDN Innovation program may seem subtle - minimally lower power, a slight reduction in cost, the ability to discern a faster signal, or the gateway to new semiconductor processes," states EDN Editor-In-Chief Maury Wright.

"Yet those subtleties represent hard-won engineering victories that make all the difference in the latest compelling consumer products, computers, and communication systems.

I congratulate all of this year's finalists for advancing the state-of-the-art in everything from discrete components to processors to chip-design tools." In the next few weeks, EDN's worldwide audience of electronics engineers and engineering managers will use an online ballot to select the ultimate winners from among these finalists.

EDN's editorial staff and Editorial Advisory Board also take part in determining the final winners.

We encourage you to visit www.edn.com to review each of the nominees.

Winners will be announced at a ceremony on April 3, 2006 in San Jose.

Backed by a two-year warranty, the iMP Series products meet international safety and performance standards including listings from UL and CE as well as full medical compliance with EN60601.
