The latest addition to the Society of Manufacturing Engineers "Manufacturing Insights" video series is Six Sigma.

The latest addition to the Society of Manufacturing Engineers "Manufacturing Insights" video series is Six Sigma This timely video is unique in that it examines this latest quality improvement initiative and its impact on manufacturing at three very different companies: Ortho Clinical Diagnostics, Gretag Imaging, and Lockheed Martin

It features in-plant interviews with manufacturing and quality personnel within these companies and highlights the results that they've achieved.

Viewers will gain valuable insight into how these companies implemented Six Sigma.

Six Sigma is a quality system that first started at Motorola in the 1980s to reduce defects.

It gained attention when it dramatically improved the bottom line not only at Motorola but also at General Electric, AlliedSignal, Lockheed Martin, IBM, and Sony.

While Six Sigma uses the same quality tools as other quality initiatives such as TQM, its power lies in the organization and the application of those tools as well as its focus on fixed length programs that directly relate to the bottom line.

Six Sigma uses these tools to identify real causes of problems and control variation to reduce scrap, defects, and repairs, while optimizing repeatability and efficiency.

The companies featured in the video all have had significant success with Six Sigma.

Ortho Clinical Diagnostics has experienced an immediate reduction in their waste bill, as well as improved quality and productivity.

Gretag Imaging has seen increased customer satisfaction as a result of their Six Sigma program, while Lockheed Martin has saved over $3 billion dollars during the last three years using a combination of Six Sigma and lean manufacturing.

Viewers will learn about the various tools that drive a Six Sigma initiative such as observational methods, scientific experimentation, and design of experiments.

They will also see how DMAIC-Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control, gives the system structure.

They will develop a deeper understanding of what Six Sigma is all about and how it can benefit their own company.
