AS-i networks linked by fieldbus in demonstrations
Arrangements for AS-i-tech 2002, the mini trade fair organised by the AS-interface UK Trade Association for March 5 and 6 2002, in Hinckley, are approaching a climax.
The booklet can be obtained free of charge.
Called 'Safety in Automation' and co-authored by well known experts in the field of functional safety.
It provides an introduction to the unique safety technology used by AS-interface and covers in detail how AS-interface Safety at Work devices operate alongside conventional AS-interface actuators and sensors on the same cable, to bring rich and flexible safety functionality, with substantial costs savings and without compromising safety integrity.

Be armed for the next information invasion
In light of recent high profile business scandals and failures, new legislation requires companies to maximise their information management for the twenty-first century - this handbook shows how.
As well as providing an excellent 'primer' for AS-interface safety systems, it includes a wealth of applications-based material designed to help AS-interface users make best use of the technology.
A major section focuses on the Safety Monitor and its capabilities, which include six logical elements to cope with both simple and complex safety functionality.
The Safety Monitor resides on the network to monitor the outputs of each safety device.
It has no bearing on standard operations and both sets of devices co-exist transparently on the network until a fault is detected, at which point the Safety Monitor shuts down the system in accordance with an agreed safety strategy.
Chapter 4 is devoted to applications examples including Emergency Stops, Door Locks and Opto-electronic protective devices such as Light Curtains and beam sensors.
Valuable field information is covered, including transferring safety signals between AS-interface and a higher level network.
Other infor mation includes diagnostics and there is a Preface by Dr Michael Schaefer, Director of the Department for Accident Prevention and Product Safety at the BGIA in Germany, which gives a useful perspective of latest safety regulations and Standards.
The AS-Interface UK Expert Alliance, a group of companies dedicated to the use of AS-Interface networking technology in UK manufacturing.
Alliance Experts include major vendors and specialist System Integrators who provide 'without obligation' support to end users.
The Alliance recently launched its own web site featuring a forum where questions from anyone using automation will be answered on-line by Alliance Experts.
The Expert Alliance promotes best in class products, best in class support and best in class solutions, and membership is a statement of intent to ensure these standards are upheld.
'Competence' is promoted at all times by the Alliance, particularly in the field of Functional Safety where it is critically important to 'get it right' first time.
Members of the UK Expert Alliance are: Belcom, Burkert Flow Control, Bihl + Wiedemann, LCA/Functional Safety Engineering, Kuhnke UK, IMI Norgren, Johnson Mathey, Kinetrol, Manchester Metropolitan University, Siemens, Sigmapi, Tyco Valves and Controls, and Wago.
