Autodesk Inventor Series Helps Elections

Autodesk Inventor Series Helps Get Quicker Results for London Mayor, Assembly and EU Elections - Election data capture specialist DRS uses the world's number 1 selling 3D mechanical design software

Autodesk Inventor Series is playing a key role in ensuring that the count is delivered accurately, in a matter of hours rather than days, at the London Mayor, London Assembly and EU Parliamentary elections held on 10 June 2004 The 3D mechanical design software, supplied through Trionics, helped DRS Data and Research Services plc bring its new image scanner to market ahead of schedule, so that it could be tried and tested well ahead of the elections

The ballot will be the biggest single election of its type in the world with a 5.2 million electorate each having up to five votes on three ballot papers.

These will be counted by DRS PhotoScribe 900 Image scanners which will not only record every clear vote cast, but also take an image of any ballot papers where there is any doubt as to the voters intent; for example, marks made outside the legal voting area.

The images will be projected onto a large screen so that they can be adjudicated by the Returning Officer's staff.

Ben Toms, DRS mechanical design engineer, explains that Inventor's ability to speed the design and development of their PhotoScribe technology has not been the only benefit gained from using the software.

"The quality of Inventor's static and dynamic design visualisation makes it easy to bring others into the process," he explains.

"For example, the sales and marketing team have been able to get better feedback at the design stage, enabling sharper targeting of our markets.

This has enabled DRS to further enhance its range of sophisticated data capture technology solutions and at the same time, pass on the cost benefits to the customer and so becoming far more competitive." DRS is supplying around 400 scanners and 400 staff to 14 count sites across London including the central calculation centre at City Hall where London-wide results will be declared.

Ballot papers will be taken to the count sites from around 4,200 polling stations when the voting closes at 10 pm.

Counting will start the following morning, 11 June, and the results are expected by tea-time.

"If the votes were counted manually in an election of this size and complexity, it could take up to a week to get the results," explains Debbie Rofe, DRS marketing manager.

For the first time there will also be visual displays in each centre displaying the count progress in each constituency.

"This will go some way to bringing back the excitement of the election process and help each centre see how the others are doing," she adds.

"This is yet another example of how Inventor Series is helping customers take and keep the lead in their own market sectors," says Autodesk Manufacturing Solutions Marketing Manager, Neil Dunsmuir.

"Although DRS was already known as a world leader in electronic ballot counting, as well as the supply of other automated capture solutions, by using Inventor they have been able to hone in on operational costs and also reduce time to market of new products and so continue to win key contracts such as this." Delivering on its strategy to help customers create, manage, and share their digital design data and solve critical business challenges, Autodesk offers the most comprehensive portfolio of integrated 2D and 3D design and data management solutions available - helping customers design better quality products, accelerate time to market, and achieve maximum project visibility and collaboration.

Unlike other offerings on the market today, these solutions are easy to deploy and use, and help companies easily transition from 2D to 3D design.

Autodesk's manufacturing solutions include Autodesk Inventor Series, the number 1 selling 3D mechanical design software, and Autodesk Inventor Professional-both with Autodesk Vault data management capabilities built in; AutoCAD Mechanical and AutoCAD Electrical software; and the Autodesk Streamline collaboration service.

In addition, customers can take advantage of widely available third-party applications purpose-built for Autodesk software. Request a free brochure from Autodesk ...
