Advantech to Debut New SOM A-200 and SOM N-200 Architectures Compliant with ARM and Intel XScale Technology at Computex Taipei 2004

Ultra low power, high performance SOM-A200 architecture achieves high mobility; Network communications centric SOM-N200 architecture delivers better connectivity Advantech, the global leading ePlatform Services Provider, will debut SOM-A200 and SOM-N200 architectures based on ARM and Intel XScale technology at Computex Taipei 2004 Compliant with Intel's PXA 255, PXA27x and IXP 42x families, Advantech provides a comprehensive range of board-level SOM platforms, marking a significant step towards introducing embedded system standards for OS-ready RISC applications

The SOM-A200 architecture is a System On Module (SOM) form factor specifically designed for ultra low power, high performance and multimedia embedded applications.

It fulfills the requirements of various embedded application demands in markets such as industrial control, medical, multimedia, transportation, military and mobile; the SOM-N200 architecture is a SOM form factor particularly designed for networking communications centric embedded applications.

It targets network security, network communications, and multimedia appliance markets.

Designed in a very compact form factor, the SOM-A200 and SOM-N200 series can be embedded into boards, embedded devices or systems.

There are two module footprints of 68 x 68mm and 68 x102mm for both of the new architectures.

The thickness is generally less than 6.8mm.

They also meet cost-efficient form factors without any expensive mechanisms, connectors or cooling systems.

"After successfully introducing the SOM-A200 series including SOM-A2558, SOM-A255F and SOM-A2552 based on PXA 255 processors, Advantech has created an SOM reference design - SOM-A2707 based on the PXA 270 processor and 2700G multimedia accelerator, the latest XScale technology launched by Intel in mid-April.

All the SOM-A series share the well-defined bus modules that provide benefits such as easy logistics, flexible design-in and faster time-to-market, " said Joe Cheng, Director of RISC Embedded Computing Division at Advantech.

"On the other hand, Advantech has also defined SOM-N200 architecture and has started to develop the SOM-N200 family series that is compliant with IXP 42x processors.

It also symbolizes in-depth co-development relations with Intel's roadmap and our commitment to RISC embedded computing solutions." The SOM-A200 and SOM-N200 System On Modules are complete SBC-level functional system platforms.

Accommodating different SoC processors and target solution oriented companion chips, the SOM-A200 and SOM-N200 series offer a full range solution portfolio for the widely various characteristics of performance and connectivity that allows customers to select their own ideal solutions to fit their target application needs.

Designed to support a wide spectrum of applications, the 200-pin main connecting golden fingers encompasses a comprehensive functional interface representing the basic board level capability of I/O, Graphic, Audio, and System control functionality.

All interfaces come with device driver-ready support.

The SOM-A200 and SOM-N200 System On Modules are equipped with two other low-profile 100-pin B2B connectors; the Local System Bus Interface that supports any customer's additional required function expansion and a Feature Extension Bus for any existing additional features.

The Customer Solution Board (CSB) is firmly connected to one sturdy 200-PIN DDR SOM-DIMM connector and two 100-pin board-to-board connectors with screws, enabling the SOM-A200 and SOM-N200 to be compact, durable and reliable mechanisms that meet performance and environment challenges, including duration, shock, and vibration.
