Avery Dennison has launched the Elastic Staple Packaging System for fastening products to packaging cards in seconds.

Avery Dennison has launched the Elastic Staple Packaging System for fastening products to packaging cards in seconds Elastic Staples can be used to replace twist and cable ties, effectively fastening even irregularly shaped products such as toys, cosmetics, tools, and kitchen accessories, and removes the need for blister or clamshell packaging

This saves costs by reducing material waste and increasing productivity.

Mike Back, marketing manager, Avery Dennison Fastener Europe, said: "The system benefits the packager, retailer and consumer by offering a highly economical, safe and environmentally sound way of fastening consumer goods to normal packaging cardstock, by using only a minimal amount of packaging materials".

"Despite the fact that items are so securely fastened, the consumer can detach the product from the packaging by hand and without the need for scissors".

"This reduces the risk of damage to the product or injury to the consumer".

"Another benefit to the manufacturer is that they need not use sharp, metal staples, pins or messy glue that can spoil the display or harm the product".

"Another key benefit is that the staples do not impair the packed product because they are made of clear polymer, and are therefore barely visible".

"The consumer is able to touch and even try the packaged item, which will add to its appeal and help the retailer increase sales," he said.

Elastic Staples are inserted using a pneumatic tool called a VNS (Variable Needle System).

The VNS uses two needles to punch small holes in the backing card on either side of the product, simultaneously feeding an Avery Dennison Elastic Staple through the needles, and toggling the ends behind the card.

The staples are available in six sizes and can stretch upon application between a range of 13mm (0.5in) to 80mm (3.25in), meaning that a variety of product shapes and sizes can be securely mounted.

Elastic Staples are joined together in a ladder-like chain and supplied by the reel, each one containing 10,000.

Because reels have such a high volume of staples, production rarely needs to stop and, when it does, the changeover process is fast and simple - which reduces the amount of production down-time.

In its simplest manual configuration the VNS applicator runs on linear guides in a mounting stand, which is fixed to any bench top to operate as a standalone packaging workstation.

To maximise productivity the module, can also easily be integrated into a fully automated production or packing line.
