Hundreds of companies in the UK have been using twin roll, reciprocal sealing beam systems for many years, for speeds of up to 25 wrapped packs a minute, with great success Indeed the middle market is still dominated by those conventional systems

According to Aetna UK, many companies are perhaps still under the impression that single roll systems are only suitable for speeds of wrapping in excess of 30 per minute and that they are in any case, too expensive for serious consideration when the time comes for replacement of the old systems.

However, Aetna said that whilst that may have been the case three years ago, it is no longer so.

Over the past few years, the range and type of single roll systems available have broadened and there are now very competitively priced systems specifically designed for wrapping speeds as low as 15 wrapped packs a minute.

Aetna UK, which is a member of the Aetna Group, is responsible for the supply and support of the Dimac range of shrink wrapping and case packing equipment in the UK.

They introduced the product 14 years ago and have had considerable success, particularly in the food and drink industry.

Over recent years, Dimac has developed a reliable, flexible, single roll range of shrink wrap equipment with models available for wrapped pack speed ranges up to 20, 30, 45 and 60, which lend themselves to any form of automatic collation for a choice for all packers of products, said Aetna.

The equipment is mono block in design and so can be extended for future changes in demand.

For example, an initial installation may be for unsupported wrapping but if at a future date, a tray is required, the new tray section can be added.

Aetna believes that the range is very well priced and at the lower speeds, the single roll systems are very competitive with twin roll systems.

Indeed, if trays are required, they may be cheaper.

With the Dimac machines there is no need for any change parts when changing from pack or container size.

Aetna said it is receiving many more enquiries from traditional users of twin roll systems who are looking to replace old systems.

They point out the many potential advantages offered by the Dimac single roll systems, including quick size changes, print registered film, flexibility, reduced film costs, speed and ability to be used with a wrap around tray.

Aetna has installed Dimac shrink wrapping systems in the UK over the past two years and about half were with contract packers, who chose Dimac for its flexibility, ease of change, registration ability and the geographically located service support provided, said the company.

Aetna added that it has invested heavily in the development of a service support team over the years, which is based in the field for customer convenience.

The company said it has a great deal of relevant experience and the managing director, Mark Tucker, pointed out that his father was first involved in shrink wrapping in the mid-1960s, when he completed a survey on behalf of Thames Board Mills on the likely impact of shrink wrapping on the corrugated board industry.

It was at that time he decided to join a manufacturer of shrink wrapping equipment and in the 1970s and 1980s he became European general manager for Doboy, which was one of the major manufacturers of shrink wrapping equipment in Europe until the early 1990s.
