Twin Roll Shrink-Wrappers Still Popular

Shrink-wrapping technology was first introduced in the 1960s for the medium to slow market segment and the twin roll, reciprocal beam systems are almost as popular today as they were 20 years ago However, according to Aetna, many companies are still under the impression that single roll systems are only suitable for speeds of wrapping in excess of 30 units per minute

They also believe that when the time comes to replace their old machines, these systems are too expensive for serious consideration.

Aetna UK said that is no longer the case.

The company has pointed out that over the past three years, the range and type of single roll systems has broadened and there are now competitively priced systems on the market designed for wrapping speeds as low as 15 wrapped packs a minute.

The company first introduced the Dimac range of shrink-wrapping and case packing equipment in to the UK in the 1990s.

The company is responsible for both the supply and support of the product range and it has enjoyed success, particularly within the food and drink industry.

Dimac has developed a reliable and flexible single roll range of shrink-wrapping equipment and offers a choice for packers of products, which lend themselves to any form of automatic collation, for wrapped pack speed ranges up to 20, 30, 45 and 60 packs per minute.

The equipment is mono block in design and can be extended for future changes in demand.

For example, an initial installation may be for unsupported wrapping, but if a tray is required at a later date, a new tray section can be added.

The range of machinery is said to be robust and competitively priced and at the lower speeds the single roll systems are comparable to the cost of twin roll systems, and if trays are required, may even be cheaper, added Aetna.

Aetna explained that it is receiving more enquiries from traditional users of twin roll systems who are looking to replace their old systems.

They are attracted to the potential advantages offered by the Dimac single roll systems, including the fact that they are user friendly and there is no need for change parts when changing pack or container sizes, added the company.

Features of the single system include claimed quick size changes, print registered film, a smaller sleeve (which reduces film costs), flexibility, speed, lower maintenance, quicker film changes and flat pad, unsupported or tray in one system.

It is also said that there are also fewer sealing problems, with a smaller tray that reduces board costs and produces a tighter pack, particularly good for glass containers, for instance, said Aetna.

The company added that 50 per cent of the Dimac shrink-wrapping systems installed in the UK within the past two years were with contract packers.

The other half was installed largely within the food and drink industry, particularly the fast growing water sector.

Currently, Aetna said it has a large installation pending for a complete end of line system in a major water plant, including a palletiser and a Robopac stretchwrapper.

Aetna UK commented that it has invested heavily in the development of a field-based service support team, and the company can now provide local service, advice and consultancy.
