Systems guard against electrical power
outages
Two leading manufacturers have installed a flywheel-based back-up power system for extreme power density, high energy efficiency and manufacturer's service quality.
Power outages that last for hours, or even momentary interruptions lasting for fractions of a second, can prove costly to industrial facilities, said Active Power These types of disruptions can potentially damage sensitive manufacturing equipment and shut down 'mission critical' operations

One of the end users is a manufacturing and design company specializing in the machining and assembly of engine components for automotive and diesel manufacturers.
The operator deployed an Active Power CleanSource 600 UPS system at the facility.
The other end user is a manufacturing company that provides electronic contract manufacturing services for mission and business critical solutions for a broad range of industries.
Honeywell installed a CleanSource 1200 UPS system for this end user.
"These manufacturing facilities now benefit from an extremely power dense and rugged critical backup power systems," said Jim Clishem, president and CEO at Active Power to manufacturingtalk.com.
"Our CleanSource UPS systems are designed to operate in a wide ambient temperate range which is typical on a manufacturing floor with no degradation in service over its 20 year design life".
With its extremely high energy efficiency and proven reliability, Active Power has deployed more than 1,750 flywheels in systems with installations in more than 40 countries on six continents.
Its industry leading energy efficiency has saved customers more than US$40 million in energy costs while at the same time reducing CO2 emissions.
* Online Technical Papers Library - Active Power has also launched an online library of technical 'white papers' that address a variety of critical power issues and technologies.
These resources will help customers understand and address the technical and business issues to be considered in the design and deployment of critical backup power and cooling systems for their mission critical facility.
* Containerised power and cooling systems - two of the most recently published white papers focus on containerised power and cooling systems and the issues surrounding the required ride-through time in a mission critical data center environment.
The paper 'Modular Power and Cooling Utility in a Box - Driving Efficiencies through Rapidly Deployed and Right-Sized Power and Cooling' discusses the reliability improvements, efficiency and financial gains to be had in an integrated continuous power system deployed in a modularised container.
The paper '15 Seconds versus 15 Minutes: Designing for High Availability' highlights the traditional practice of designing uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems based on a requirement of 15 min of 'ride-through' time and how newer, more cost-effective technologies such as flywheels have changed the need for this requirement.
"We believe this whitepaper library will serve as a valuable resource for those who oversee mission critical facilities; consulting and specifying engineers; and those who regularly monitor the power management and UPS markets," said Martin Olsen, director of product management and development for Active Power.
"We're excited to offer our industry perspective and expertise in these whitepapers.
Many of the papers are based on market feedback and pain points we're hearing from customers in the trenches and how end users can address these issues".
* Five categories - the library is structured into five categories based on whitepaper topics, as follows.
* Containerized Power and Cooling Systems.
* Thermal and Compressed Air Storage Technology (TACAS).
* Flywheel Operation.
* Flywheels for Mission Critical Applications.
* Other Topics.
Active Power currently has eight papers published and posted to the library with several more industry relevant papers to be made available soon.
Active Power is a technology and thought leader in the mission critical power solutions industry with more than 150 patents held worldwide.
