Knowledge-driven Product Lifecycle Management strategy helps companies optimize the use of product knowledge across the extended enterprise.

Baan, the leading enterprise application provider for industrial enterprises and part of Invensys plc, has announced its major new Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) knowledge-driven enterprise strategy The strategy supports Baan's new iBaan for PLM solution that provides a scenario-driven information continuum to facilitate collaboration, both internally and externally among multiple roles, constituents and stakeholders throughout a product's lifecycle

Baan's new PLM strategy can help organizations to maximize the ability to add lifetime value that goes beyond the initial sale, minimize stock obsolescence and ensure design for manufacturing, and minimize product development cycle times.

Baan's new iBaan for PLM strategy addresses daily processes and problems to help deliver solutions that can reduce non-value-added tasks, eliminate data entry duplication, introduce process automation, and optimize decision-making based on pervasive, real-time analytics and scenario-based reporting of product information.

This can help organizations to reduce cost, waste and redundant inventory, improve productivity and manufacturing yields, shorten time to volume and to market, reduce liability, and enable greater efficiencies.

Major users of Baan's iBaan for PLM solution include Siemens PTD, EMS Technologies and Larsen and Toubro (L and T).

Siemens PTD manufactures, supplies and services power transmission and distribution equipment and Mart Yeager, Supervisor Engineering Systems, Siemens PTD said: "We have a number of functional iBaan for PLM users throughout Siemens PTD facilitating the internal collaboration of data between design and development, project engineering, manufacturing, purchasing, sales, information technology, quality control, manufacturing engineering/planning and routings, receiving and inspection and customer service departments.

This now enables us to support and maintain a closed-loop system that helps us to manage all aspects of a product's lifecycle within one comprehensive virtual environment - something that was not possible using our previous legacy systems." Larsen and Toubro (L and T) is one of the largest engineering and construction companies in India and B.J.

Shenoy, Joint General Manager for L and T's Heavy Engineering Division (HED), commented: "Since the implementation of iBaan for PLM we have increased our delivery performance by over 30 percent, seen export content rise by 60 percent, and have experienced a higher turnover rate from our Production Centers and a significantly better response to business pressures.

Not only is this enhanced integration helping to significantly improve the quality of our manufacturing and design process but the company now has an electronic database for all our documents and drawings.

Before, they were manually filed on paper which made finding anything out virtually impossible as it was very tedious and slow.

With iBaan for PLM the process is much easier as authorized users across the extended enterprise can easily retrieve newly-stored files for immediate reference and authorization." President of the new Baan PLM business unit, Ilana Jucha said: "Today's PLM vendor market is characterized by a two-stage approach to the lifecycle of a product.

This involves focusing on the integration of the design engineering department with production and manufacturing.

Based on over 20 years experience in the global manufacturing market, coupled with many years involvement in the PLM field, Baan's strategy supplies a focus on the product throughout all the organization's various business processes - from sourcing and procurement through to manufacturing and service." David M Cahn, CEO of Y2G Associates commented: "The latest developments in PLM technology need to support companies and their extended partners by helping them track, manage and analyze product information throughout the entire lifecycle - from design to retirement - in order to reduce time-to-volume and improve the rate of new product introductions.

This archived information can then enable continuous evolution to optimum inter-business processes for product lifecycle execution.

"The iBaan for PLM strategy provides knowledge-driven enterprise solutions to help organizations navigate product information within a complex, multi-dimensional, collaborative environment and address their PLM requirements across multiple roles, processes, systems and touchpoints," concluded David M.

Cahn.

iBaan for PLM is part of the iBaan suite of Internet-enabled solutions that combines proven Baan technology with new developments to enable customers to take significant steps towards seamlessly integrating systems and processes.

It provides end-users with personalized and easy-to-use information, and empowers businesses to collaborate with their customers and suppliers over the Internet.
