Commenting on the ONS Manufacturing (Index of Production) figures for October 2006, Tony Walsh, National Director of Manufacturing at Barclays, said: "It's particularly pleasing to see manufacturing output continuing to rise over the three month period.

"Whilst ultimately, long term prosperity is the name of the game, we must not gloss over the fact that there was some month to month volatility which could be as a result of the strong pound hitting exports.

However, on balance, the three month figures tend to represent a more consistent barometer of output and there is a continued good news story; particularly in the machinery and equipment sector.

"It will be interesting to watch the machinery and equipment sector into the New Year as continued rises could suggest a real feel good factor as businesses up their investment in this area.".
