Commenting on the ONS Manufacturing (Index of Production) figures for November 2006, Barclays said it may only be an incremental rise, it is still a nudge in the right direction.

Commenting on the ONS Manufacturing (Index of Production) figures for November 2006, Tony Walsh, national director of Manufacturing at Barclays, said: "When it comes to assessing the overall impact of these figures, it's very much a case of every little helps when it comes to month on month increases Whilst it may only be an incremental rise, it is still a nudge in the right direction and these nudges, over the course of 2006, have culminated in 2006 being the strongest year for manufacturing output for some time." He added: "Compared with the same period last year, output is up 2.4% and starts 2007 on a very positive note

I think manufacturers can expect to see more of the same with modest rises taking us through to the end of the year." Walsh concluded: "However, despite these encouraging forecasts, the industry continues to face a number of challenges as a result of playing in a global marketplace.

The real winners will be those that are aware of the challenges and meet them head on with a strong strategy in place from the outset.".
