Low inertia motors drive motion control
Baldor has launched a new range of brushless servo motors for precision motion control applications, based on rare-earth neodymium iron boron magnets.
ProCom's modular CNC300 motion control system, with its unique mathematical contour processing algorithms, provides the real-time control required to maintain the high, jerk-free performance of the oscillating knife.
This tool can cut complex shapes at rates of up to 1.5m/sec, combined with accelerations of 15m/sec2 - providing high throughput and good cutting quality for end users of Assyst-Bullmer's machines.
For this particular application, which involves cutting quality leather and other tough materials for use in automobile interiors, a high degree of torque was essential, and after evaluation ProCom selected matched motor and drive combinations from Baldor.
The motors come from Baldor's BSM AC brushless servo range, which feature rare earth magnets for dynamic response to drive signals, together with proprietary stator construction techniques which enhance thermal performance to deliver considerably higher than average output torques.
In this application, these motors are driven by FlexDrive units, a range of digital amplifiers supplied with a Windows set-up program incorporating an auto-tuning algorithm for rapid configuration.
Baldor is supplying multiple drive systems for each machine, for the axes that control the X-Y cutting table, and for the oscillating knife and support materials handling axes.
The selection process for these motors and drives by ProCom was helped by the availability of Baldor's publication of speed-torque curves for motor/drive combinations, which minimise the need to undertake detailed evaluations - or to incorporate costly performance margins in a design.
"The high torque of these motor and drive combinations is helping us to deliver higher throughput to our machine builder customers", says Herr Breddermann, Bereichsleiter CNC Produkte of ProCom.
"The wide range of FlexDrive and BSM products also helps us, allowing us to obtain cost-effective motors and drive choices for all the various axes needed in these machines". Request a free brochure from Baldor UK ...
