PVD coatings on tooling is now cooler

An Oerlikon Balzers Coating product story
Edited by the Manufacturingtalk editorial team Feb 20, 2007

The relatively high coating temperatures required for PVD coating of cold-working steels and die steels have been reduced for makers of extrusion and injection moulding tools.

Visitors to the UK's Southern Manufacturing were among the first to witness the latest development in PVD (Physical vapour deposition) coating from Oerlikon Balzers Coating.

PVD coating has long presented problems to manufacturers of injection moulding and extrusion tools as well as those producing punches and forming tools due to the relatively high temperatures required (400 - 450 deg C).

Now, with the development of Balanit-Arctic, which allows coating at temperatures as low as 200 deg C, effective PVD coating of cold-working steels and die steels is possible.

As the world-leader in the development of hard, wear resistant PVD coatings, Oerlikon Balzers Coating continues to develop its range to the benefit of manufacturing industry as a whole.

The productivity enhancements gained from the correct application of PVD coatings can make significant differences to the 'bottom line' in many manufacturing sectors.

Here in the UK, from its coating centres in Milton Keynes, Bedfordshire and Elland, West Yorkshire, Oerlikon Balzers Coating UK is able to provide both rapid response and a level of technical expertise that is second to none.

Major investment has taken place to ensure that the facilities meet the exact needs of industry and its specific sectors.

Typical is the creation of the state-of-the-art dedicated motorsport coating facility at the UK headquarters in Milton Keynes.

This new centre has been developed in response to increasing motor sport business from the UK and European markets and will provide an even better service for motor sport customers.

Whether the requirement is for a complex mould cavity or a simple twist drill, Oerlikon Balzers Coating has the technology and expertise to deliver productivity gains and cost savings to UK manufacturing as a whole.
