Feanor OU is perfoming research, with the co-operation of some of the European National Metrology Institutes (NMI), on torque wrench calibration procedures, in order to improve ISO 6789 and include in the new release of this standard guidelines and procedures for the evaluation of a budget for the uncertainty of measurement of type II torque wrenches Target of the Caltorque project are: 1

analyse the state-of-the art in torque wrench calibration in the EU, including National Metrology Institutes, accredited calibration laboratories, manufacturers and user of torque wrenches 2.

understand and investigate sources of uncertainty of measurement on dial and cut-off torque wrenches (defined in annex A of ISO 6789 standard) 3.

reach a common guideline for calibration of torque wrenches at EA/ISO level (similar to EA-10/14 for torque transducers) containing also example for good calibration practice and evaluation of uncertainty of measurement for these type of tools, thus improving actual standard ISO 6789 (which does not contain an annex on this subject) 4.

based on the results of 1,2 and 3, design and manufacture a TW prototype with increased linearity and reduced spread and hysteresis 5.

define a common guideline for calibration of torque wrenches calibration devices.
