An expanding components machining company found its IT based on using spreadsheets for stock control and word documents to track orders could no longer cope, so it sought a solution.

Experts in precision engineering, AK Precision, manufactures and delivers high-quality precision machined components in all major industry sectors The company has undergone major development since it was formed in 2002

From humble beginnings with a workforce of three, the company now employs almost 20 staff based in a 10,000ft2 manufacturing plant.

The company operates CNC turning and machining centres of varying capacity to produce parts for use in many sectors, from Formula One cars to aeroplanes.

Throughout the company's rapid expansion it became clear to the senior management team that their IT system was becoming unmanageable.

It was based on using spreadsheets for stock control and word documents to track orders.

* System solution - the company needed a system that was both cost-effective and easy to use.

It considered various systems before settling on the ProgressPlus software written by Berkeley Myles.

Berkeley Myles has extensive experience in designing and implementing manufacturing software, which helps streamline, automate and integrate the management and control of shop-floor production and administrative processes.

The system has now been in place for almost four years.

Director at AK Precision, Wayne Read, believed it has been a key component in the company's drive to improve efficiency across its manufacturing processes.

He said: "ProgressPlus is invaluable to our business; it ensures efficiency throughout the manufacturing process and has given us the tools necessary to move forward and expand the company.

Expanding with our previous make-shift system would not have been possible".

Read explained: "Ease of use was a major factor in choosing ProgressPlus, with other directors coming from different backgrounds it was essential the system was user friendly enough to be picked up by those new to precision engineering.

Integrating ProgressPlus with SAGE financial software has also been very effective in processing financial information quickly and effectively".

Berkeley Myles told manufacturingtalk.com that ProgressPlus is ideally suited to give manufacturing companies a user friendly solution to collating and retrieving essential information.

Director of Berkeley Myles Solutions, Tony MacBride, said: "Many of our clients are within the manufacturing industry and all continue to see benefits from using our production control software.

We are happy to give a consultation to demonstrate how the ProgressPlus solution can bring large returns that far outweigh the cost of any change.".
