Microbiological contamination in metalworking systems - latest BOHS UK seminar is designed to raise awareness of respiratory health risks and reduce risk of workers' respiratory ill-health.

Seminar to educate on microbiological contamination Microbiological contamination in metalworking systems - latest BOHS UK seminar is designed to raise awareness of respiratory health risks and reduce risk of workers' respiratory ill-health Microbiological contamination of metalworking fluids (MWF) used as coolants and lubricants in engineering has been linked with outbreaks of respiratory ill-health such as occupational asthma and extrinsic allergic alveolitis (aka hypersensitivity pneumonitis)

Problems potentially arise where MWF, which is recirculated, becomes heavily colonised by microbial contaminants and workers are exposed to aerosols, or mists, generated during machine operation.

Awareness of the potential problems, coupled with practical controls to limit contamination and aerosol generation, should reduce the risk of workers' respiratory ill-health.

This latest BOHS open technical seminar aims to raise awareness and review the control options, and will provide an opportunity for discussion and exchange of practical experiences.

Open to non-members as well as members, any occupational health professional working within the engineering sector should consider attending.

* Seminar - 'Microbiological Contamination in Metalworking Systems - Respiratory Health Risks and Control of Exposure' is an Open Technical Seminar, scheduled on 10.00h to 15.30h, Wednesday 10th May 2006, at Health and Safety Laboratory, Buxton, Derbyshire, UK.

Speakers will include a consultant occupational respiratory physician involved in investigations of workers' respiratory ill-health in engineering companies in the UK; a microbiologist from the USA involved in ill-health investigations; a member of the UK Lubricants Association; staff from HSE to describe the current HSE initiatives to improve controls in the industry; and a consultant occupational hygienist with experience of the industry to provide practical advice on reducing workers' exposure.

There will also be an opportunity at the end of the day to take a tour of HSL's brand new facility at Buxton.

The seminar can be booked on-line via the BOHS Web site, where the full programme is also available.

The cost, which includes lunch and VAT, is only GBP 40 for BOHS members or GBP 60 for non-members.

* About BOHS - occupational hygiene is about eliminating or controlling health hazards in the workplace (not about washing hands properly), and the primary objective of the profession is to protect the long-term health and well-being of those at work.

The British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS) is the definitive voice of occupational hygiene and has strong alliances with other health and safety organisations, the HSE, trade unions and business.

BOHS was formed in 1953 and its aim is simple: to help to reduce work-related ill-health.

With members from within industry, health, education, government and research, it is by far the biggest hygiene society in Europe, and has been strengthened by its merger in April 2003 with the British Institute of Occupational Hygienists.

The Faculty of Occupational Hygiene within BOHS plays a vital role in developing and maintaining the professional standards of hygienists, and is recognised internationally as a major professional examination and qualification body.
