Co-solvent ousts 'trich' to clean aircraft parts
For the maintenance of precision aircraft components, British Airways Component Engineering at Hayes, has replaced trichloroethylene with a faster, more efficient co-solvent cleaning system.
The recently introduced Landa SJ is a front loading, solvent-free automatic parts washer featuring a spinning jet spray bar propelled by water.
Innovation of this level means that manufacturers get a cost-effective method of rapid parts cleaning.
As it is water-propelled, there is no need for high maintenance parts such as transmissions, electric turntable drive motors, gears or brushes.

If 'trich' is a problem, try this one
An aggressive cleaning solvent for medium to heavy-duty degreasing applications offers an ideal long-term replacement for n-propyl Bromide (nPB), Trichloroethylene (Trike), and other solvents.
Co-solvent cleaning process replaces 'trike'
Following a thorough review of available high performance solvents and systems, a plating company has replaced its trichloroethylene system with a semi-automatic co-solvent cleaning process.
While conventional washers rotate the components in a basket, the spinning cleaning-jet action of the Landa SJ range ensures that parts are blasted up to 200 times/min using multi precision spray nozzles.
The strength of the cleaning action is further strengthened by the adjustable spray arm, which means that the powerful cleaning sprays can be placed within 25cm of the parts, or wherever it is most effective for the size and shape of components.
Another advantage is that only a small footprint is required thanks to its innovative swivelling door, which does not open out into the shop, saving up to 16 sq ft of space.
There is also an optional bag filter, which collects solids from 10-150 microns in size - adding life to the cleaning fluid.
The Landa SJ range is built to last - manufactured from 10-gauge steel coated with epoxy powder paint or, optionally, constructed from stainless steel.
With a one-hour wash timer on board, unattended operation is easily achieved, while a seven-day heater timer saves energy by switching itself off overnight or at the weekend.
Models are available with tank capacities ranging from 322 up to 662 litres and with basket diameters from 61 to 107cm.
For manufacturers that prefer top loading machines, Landa also has plenty to offer.
For example, also making use of water propelled spinning spray bar is the SJ-15/10 range of top loading aqueous parts washers.
With up to 23 precision spray nozzles, components are hit from every angle at a distance never more than 45cm.
For maximum operator protection a brush brake automatically turns off the pump when the lid is opened.
There is also a disc oil skimmer, which automatically removes floating oils from the solution tank.
Featuring two stationary spray arms with 88 directional spray orifices (more than three times the number usually found on conventional washers) is the SJ-5 top loading automatic spray tub parts washer.
The removable parts basket is tapered to ensure that focused washing maintains components in the centre of the vortex for uniform washing.
