One system sets milling and turning
tools
A non-contact tool setting system can set tool length and radius for milling and turning tools to meet the growing trend towards the use of mill-turn turning centres.
At EMO 2007, Blum Novotest launched its LaserControl NT-H3D non-contact tool setting system, the TC76/TC53 touch probes, the Z-Nano IR tool length setting probe, the TG80 for workpiece temperature measurement and the FormControl V3 software for in-process workpiece measurement * Mill-turn centre tool setting - the LaserControl NT-H3D non-contact tool setting system can set tool length and radius for milling and turning tools

Blum Novotest will be demonstrating its full range of production metrology equipment at the EMO show in Hannover in September.
It has been developed to meet the growing trend towards the using mill-turn turning centres where normally milling tools are measured with a laser and turning tools with a mechanical probe.
The NT-H3D can measure both sets of tools and so eliminates using two separate systems.
Capable of conducting temperature compensation calculations in all three axes, this system generated considerable interest from manufacturers looking to reduce tool setting times at EMO, said Blum to manufacturingtalk.
* Tool length setting probe - the Z-Nano IR mechanical tool length setting probe uses infrared transmission technology and is ideal for pallet-fed machine tools and retrofit applications.
Alongside the Z-Nano was the new Blum TG80 system that has been developed for in-process measurement of workpiece temperature.
For very high accuracy applications, the TG80 can measure the temperature at up to eight positions and feed the results back to the control via infrared signals.
This new system is guaranteed to deliver optimal results to the end user with its automatically applied compensation system.
* Work probing - the FormControl V3 software is used to support the measurement of the workpiece.
Working in conjunction with the TC range of Blum spindle probes, this software is ideal for 5-axis applications, said Blum to manufacturingtalk.com.
Version 3 allows the user to eliminate additional co-ordinate measuring machine (CMM) set-up times by measuring the workpiece in-situ without having to remove the component and put it on a CMM.
Blum also demonstrated its LaserControl NT.
The 'third generation' laser system for tool setting and tool breakage control solves the signal interference problems caused by coolant and swarf affecting the optical measuring system in the machine work envelope.
It uses a patented 'out of the beam' technology that significantly reduces tool setting times, said Blum.
