An exceptionally hard, insulating carbon coating, is providing a breakthrough in wear protection and, furthermore, opening up additional design opportunities in the hydraulic pump sector.

Oerlikon Balzers Coating is helping manufacturers of hydraulic pumps overcome some of the inherent problems associated with these products The Oelikon Balzers Coating Balanit DLC is an exceptionally hard, insulating carbon coating

Balzers said that it is a 'breakthrough' in increasing wear protection and, furthermore, is opening up additional design opportunities in the hydraulic pump sector.

One particular area of advantage is in the design of very compact hydraulic motors where the high power density makes lubrication difficult and wear is exacerbated by adhesive mechanisms.

* The use of Balanit DLC coating cuts the friction between the pump's rollers and grey iron pistons by 40%.

* Energy loss on start up is reduced by 18%.

* Wear is virtually eliminated.

For example, on a typical radial piston motor with a 70kN load running at 6 rev/min at 50 deg C, the wear after 58 000 revolutions was undetectable on a Balanit coated pump, whereas the uncoated pump showed 10 micron of wear over the same period.

In many cases manufacturers are finding that conventional carbide wear parts are no longer providing an adequate protection against wear.

Moving fluids under high pressure and at extreme flow velocities when those fluids may be contaminated with fine particles places many water pump components under extreme stresses and erosive wear.

* About Balzers - Oerlikon Balzers Coating is the world's leading supplier of PVD (physical vapour deposition) coatings, which significantly improve the performance and durability of precision components as well as tools for the metal and plastics processing industries.

These coatings marketed under the Balanit brand name, are extremely thin and exceptionally hard.

They significantly reduce friction and wear.

Oerlikon Balzers Coating also develops processes, manufactures and sells systems and production facilities, and offers contract coating services through a dynamically growing network that currently encompasses more than 70 coating centres in Europe, the Americas and Asia.

Oerlikon Balzers Coating is a business unit of the Swiss Oerlikon Group, one of the world's leading makers of industrial solutions and 'cutting-edge' technology in textile production, thin film coating, propulsion, precision and vacuum technology.
