Bowers recently supplied 10ft capacity Ultra-Light Sylvac Caliper to measure the length of exceptionally large shafts, an operation which was time-consuming on a CMM.

Unilathe in Stoke-on-Trent, UK, regularly makes investments in new CNC Machine Tools in state of the art measuring instruments The company recently purchased an extremely unusual gauge from Bowers UK

The company had to measure the length of exceptionally large shafts and had a problem in trying to find an instrument with the required accuracy and capacity.

A chance conversation with Richard Briggs, Bowers' local sales engineer revealed the ideal instrument, said Unilathe.

Bowers supplied a 10ft (3m) capacity Ultra-Light Sylvac Caliper.

The Sylvac instrument's main beam is constructed of advanced composites adding to revolutionary digital gauge's accuracy, strength and lack of weight.

Its contact faces are coated in titanium to give excellent wear resistance.

Operator repeatability is helped by the caliper's constant measuring force, and ease of reading is aided by the gauge's large digital display.

Unilathe's quality manger, Jeff Bratt, said that operators had to use one of the company's coordinate measuring machines (CMM) to measure the large shafts.

Transporting the parts and use of CMM time had become a major problem, said Bratt.

He continued: "Before we discovered the Sylvac caliper, we despaired of ever finding a gauge with the capacity to measure our shafts.

Since using the gauge, valuable CMM time has been released and measuring times have been slashed".

Bratt added: "To further speed-up our shaft measuring process we have constructed two V-block saddles, containing alignment slots to accept the new gauge, and allow us to check the required lengths.

Our new lightweight caliper will help to ensure that our valued customers continue to receive the highest quality components from Unilathe".
