The survey, conducted by market research agency, Vanson Bourne, also highlighted the fact that manufacturing companies were also equally worried (64 per cent) about end users utilising company storage resources more efficiently Compared with other market sectors - such as financial services - manufacturing companies were only half as likely to be concerned about the high proportion of junk mail (54 per cent of financial services firms compared with only 28 % of manufacturers).
Another area of high concern, nominated by just under a third of manufacturing companies (24 per cent), was ensuring that data access and storage systems meet the latest compliance standards.
"Unstructured data is increasing at an unprecedented rate".
"The old approach of simply adding more storage hardware doesn't work anymore, especially with demand doubling every year or so," comments Pete Marshall, Senior Technical Consultant at B2net.
"There are a number a ways that the data growth problem can be addressed," adds Peter Marshall.
"Files can be moved out of the business' central storage system to cheaper storage mediums".
"Creating a central storage hub rather than fragmented silos of data and utilising Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) techniques to gain greater control over data usage and growth can all help".
