With unstructured data growth doubling every 12 to 18 months, over two-thirds of UK manufacturing companies are most concerned with controlling the alarming growth in data demand.

Uncontrolled growth in corporate data is seen as a significant problem for major manufacturing companies, according to a survey commissioned by B2net, an independent storage integrator Over two-thirds of UK manufacturing companies (64%) questioned were most concerned with controlling the alarming growth in data demand

The survey, conducted by market research agency, Vanson Bourne, also highlighted the fact that manufacturing companies were also equally worried (64%) about end users utilising company storage resources more efficiently Compared with other market sectors - such as financial services - manufacturing companies were only half as likely to be concerned about the high proportion of junk mail (54% of financial services firms compared with only 28% of manufacturers).

Another area of high concern, nominated by just under a third of manufacturing companies (24%), was ensuring that data access and storage systems meet the latest compliance standards.

"Unstructured data is increasing at an unprecedented rate.

The old approach of simply adding more storage hardware doesn't work anymore, especially with demand doubling every year or so," commented Pete Marshall, senior technical consultant at B2net.

There are a number a ways that the data growth problem can be addressed," added Marshall.

"Files can be moved out of the business' central storage system to cheaper storage mediums.

Creating a central storage hub rather than fragmented silos of data and utilising Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) techniques to gain greater control over data usage and growth can all help." * About B2net - B2net is a vendor independent storage integrator founded in 2000.
