Cranfield University has won a GBP 226,000 contract to offer a Fellowship in lean manufacturing to employees from SMEs in the South East of England.

Cranfield University has won a GBP 226,000 contract to offer a Fellowship in lean manufacturing to employees from small and medium-sized enterprises in the South East of England This exclusive project, co-financed by the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) and the European Social Fund (ESF), provides nominated employees with the opportunity to spend 10 weeks, free of charge, at Cranfield University's Manufacturing Management Centre following an intensive programme on lean manufacturing principles

The time spent at Cranfield will be followed by a three-month period when the nominees will return to their companies to feedback and implement their newly acquired knowledge.

Full consultancy support will be offered by Cranfield during the foundation programme and for the first three months of the implementation stage, after which continued support will incur a low cost.

Richard Clayton, Business Development Director at Cranfield Manufacturing Management Centre, said: "This is a great achievement for Cranfield and an excellent opportunity for small to medium enterprises in the South Eastern region to participate in such training at no cost to themselves.

We are delighted to have been chosen to offer our services in this way." Participants who go on to complete 12 months of implementation will be presented with the Cranfield Fellowship Award together with the opportunity to join the Association of Manufacturing Managers - a network with almost 1,000 existing Fellows in manufacturing management.

Training places are limited and require a submitted application before mid-June.

The term 'lean manufacturing' was first used by the International Motor Vehicle Programme at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and publicised in the book 'The Machine that Changed the World' which advocated a comprehensive set of techniques and ways of thinking beyond simple problem solving.

Eliminating waste with the goal of creating value, being responsive to change, while continuously focusing on quality and enhancing the effectiveness of the entire workforce are key elements of the 'lean' way of doing business.
