SME confidence reflected in course attendance
Confidence among SME owner-managers is high, with almost 50 joining Cranfield School of Management's Business Growth and Development Programme during September 2006.
"Businesses who take part grow faster than their peers and grow faster after the programme than they did before." Some 700 talented owner-managers have passed through BGP since 1988.
Some of their businesses are becoming household names and there are strong connections to the local area.
Award-winning Cobra Beer, whose boss Karan Bilimoria attended BGP in 1998, is brewed in Bedford.
Hotel Chocolat, the UK's biggest chocolate gifts specialist, recently opened its newest outlet in central Milton Keynes.
And Bedford-based Pacific Direct hit the headlines at the start of the year when founder Lara Morgan took her entire staff to Barbados, to celebrate passing the £1m profit mark! Pacific Direct has more than trebled sales and profits since Lara attended BGP in 1999.
Says Lara of BGP: "The programme was worth every penny and I'm no longer flying by the seat of my pants!" "We want to bring BGP to the attention of all ambitious owner-managers who are based locally," explains Gerard Burke.
"This is the UK's biggest, most successful and longest-running programme dedicated to growing small businesses, it's on their doorstep and it works! Recent economic projections predict that this area will be the fastest-growing region of the UK in the next ten years, and we need even more local champions who are ready to step up to the challenge." The next Business Growth Programme begins in January 2006.
