The Carbon Trust has taken over the management of the Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA) scheme on behalf of the UK government's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

The Carbon Trust has taken over the management of the Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA) scheme on behalf of the UK government's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs with effect from 5 August 2002 To coincide with this, a number of new initiatives have been launched including the expansion of the Energy Technology List and a marketing programme which has been created to help manufacturers, suppliers and purchasers promote and identify qualifying equipment

The Energy Technology List details the range of energy-saving products and technologies that can qualify for 100 per cent first year allowances under the Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA) scheme.

As of 5 August 2002 the list of qualifying products and technologies has been expanded from boilers, pipe insulation, thermal screens, Combined Heat and Power, lighting, motors, variable speed drives and refrigeration equipment, to include heat pumps for space heating, warm air and radiant heaters, solar thermal systems, and compressed air equipment (as well as the expansion of the existing technology class for boilers to include efficient oil-fired condensing boilers and the inclusion of refrigeration cabinets and compressors in the refrigeration category).

To help promote qualifying products and technologies a new Energy Technology List symbol has been developed.

In addition, the Enhanced Capital Allowance website, www.eca.gov.uk, has been relaunched with an online exhibition to help the end-user find suitable products and technologies on the Energy Technology List.

The benefits of this initiative are as follows.

* The Energy Technology List helps companies identify energy-efficient products and technologies which can qualify for the 100 per cent first year allowance under the ECA scheme as well as save on long term operating costs.

* Companies with products on the Energy Technology List can now use the new Energy Technology List symbol to give themselves a competitive advantage over other products on the market.

The Energy Technology List symbol demonstrates that the product is independently endorsed and can benefit from the environmental and fiscal advantages associated with the ECA scheme.

As manager of the ECA scheme, the Carbon Trust's responsibilities now include the maintenance of the Energy Technology and Product Lists, as well as the identification and assessment of further technologies that could merit support through the scheme.
