The foresight to move into new products and new markets, based on acquisition of machining centres, has ensured the continued growth of a former spring maker.

The foresight to move into new products and new markets has ensured the continued growth of S D Precision, based in Stevenage, Hertfordshire Originally focused as a manufacturer of flat and coil springs, the company identified the requirement back in 1996 to move into CNC machining and reposition itself to offer 'A Complete Service'

Now in 2003, S D Precision own five Cincinnati vertical machining centres, enabling the company to provide a range of manufacturing services to the medical, opto-electronic, military, audio and precision equipment industries.

The latest purchases from Cincinnati are from the V-CNC range of entry-level machining centres, ensuring ease of use for the operators and total flexibility with other Fanuc-controlled Cincinnati machines already installed, at an affordable price.

Precision's sales and marketing director, Steve Burton comments:- "We were a little apprehensive when moving into CNC.

At that time our product range focused purely on conventional manual machines it was hard to imagine how we could put CNC to best use within our manufacturing facilities.

Since purchasing the first Cincinnati VMC back in 1996, we have expanded our product lines, can produce one-off prototyping and batch work for our customers to a very high standard, and have ensured our survival and future position within the marketplace as a total solutions provider." "We now supply bespoke products to a major player in the medical industry, providing automation solutions and testing equipment to the customers' specific requirements.

We manufacture parts for cash handling equipment, P.A.E (Professional Audio Equipment) and laser guidance systems for the defence industry, all requiring a high level of accuracy, which is no problem for the Cincinnati machines.

" Established in 1986 with just four people by the owner Steve Discombe, the company now sells internationally, employs seventeen people and relocated in 1994 into larger premises.

Steve Burton added: "We were literally bursting out of the door.

Our current facilities on the Stevenage Enterprise Centre provide us with room for growth.

We find our customers are impressed when they visit our factory, as they see our commitment to using high quality Cincinnati machine tools, generating high quality products for S.D.
