VMC performs five-sides machining

Travelling column, long-table VMC is able to machine a wide range of components from all sides by swivelling the spindle to approach from any direction.

A new angle to achieve high precision, five-face machining on a new concept of travelling column vertical machining centre from Hedelius, is now available in the UK through C Dugard of Hove, Sussex This new concept machine will be launched at EMO 2005 in Hanover encompassing a robust swivelling head with the ability to machine parts up to 4500mm long in X, 630mm in Y and 810mm in Z with high levels of metal removal

The 'Tiltenta' (T-Series) is able to machine a wide range of components from all sides by swivelling the spindle to approach from any direction using Heidenhain glass scales to position within an accuracy of five seconds of arc.

The spindle positioning can also be totally integrated with a range of NC rotary tables while the large working volume can be sub-divided into two independent machining areas.

This capability enables higher productivity pendulum production techniques giving greater spindle utilisation to be utilised whereby one section of the table can be used for machining while the other is loaded and unloaded in complete safety.

With rapid axis traverse rates of 60m/min, the Tiltenta will position with minimum loss of machining time and is further enhanced by a very high metal removal rate capability when milling or drilling.

For instance, an extended trial on a very complex steel component recorded some 650m3/min of material removed during a continuous 60h run.

A drilling cycle also recorded high penetration rates using a 45mm diameter drill directly from solid and without vibration.

A tool magazine with 40 positions as standard is mounted behind covers in the travelling column of the machine keeping it totally shielded from swarf and coolant.

This tool change concept enables a tool to be exchanged in just 3.5s.

An option of a higher capacity 100 tool magazine is also available.
