Five-axis VMC machines in one set-up

A 5-axis vertical machining centre will demonstrate five-sides machining at EMO 2007, using simultaneous five-axis tool positioning and the combination of multiple operations into a single cycle.

At EMO 2007, C Dugard, of Hove, UK, will demonstrate five-sided machining using simultaneous five-axis tool positioning and the combination of multiple operations into a single cycle A high specification Heidenhain iTNC 530 CNC will operate the Dugard Eagle X-5, 5-axis vertical machining centre (VMC) to suit different machining scenarios

For example, the standard spindle works at up to 10,000 rev/min through a belt drive, but this high productivity VMC has been developed to accommodate high speed 18,000 and 24,000 rev/min spindle units.

To provide maximum machining stability to the direct mounted trunnion style rotary and tilt table, a fully supported combined saddle and table casting sits on an exceptionally rigid bed casting.

The arrangement enables the 2-axis unit to accept loads up to 600kg.

It has high torque linear technology drive motors integrated within the rotary and tilting axes.

Travels are 500mm in X, 600mm in Y and 465mm in Z while the A-axis can be tilted between +95 deg to - 95 deg.

The fully programmable 360 deg C-axis can be positioned or rotated at up to 100 rev/min to accommodate light turning applications integrated with 5-axis milling and drilling cycles.

Rapid traverse rates are 40m/min in each axis to an accuracy of +0.005mm and repeatability is within 0.005mm.

A 24-position electrically driven tool magazine with a cam-type swinging arm enables tools to be exchanged in just 2.5s.

All three spindle variants have the advantage of HSK 63A tapers.

Of the two optional higher specification CyTec electro-spindles, the 18,000 rev/min unit is powered by a 27kW drive developing 129Nm of torque.

The high speed 24,000 rev/min unit is powered by a 43kW motor having 91Nm of torque for heavier duty machining cycles.

For 5-axis linear interpolation, the Heidenhain iTNC 530 control is hard to beat for specification, features, operator interface and full 3D, five-axis simulation.

Program memory is ample at 30GB and a whole range of canned cycles is included.

Helical and spline interpolation are also included with dynamic collision monitoring available as an option.
