UK Minister for Trade to visit EMO 2007

Recognising the importance of EMO 2007 to many UK businesses, Lord Digby Jones, UK Minister for Trade Promotion and former head of the CBI, will visit and spend time with UK exhibitors.

In a week's time over 2,100 companies from 42 countries will descend on Hannover Exhibition Centre for EMO Hannover 2007, the world's leading showcase for metal working technologies (September 17-22) Celebrating its 30th year, EMO Hannover is a truly international forum for all technologies involved in metalworking production

It is a rare opportunity to meet a high number of key decision makers from a wide range of sectors from all over the world and has a strong attraction for everyone with an interest in industrial manufacturing, ranging from machine tool makers or buyers, RandD specialists or next-generation engineers.

Recognising the importance of the event to many UK businesses, Lord Digby Jones, the newly appointed Minister for Trade Promotion and former head of the CBI, will visit and spend time with UK exhibitors.

Dr John Collins, Business Development manager for the Manufacturing Technologies Association (MTA), the trade association of which the majority of UK exhibitors are members, said: "We're delighted to have such a high profile Minister taking an interest in manufacturing technologies.

This year's event will pay particular attention to advanced technologies in relation to reconfigurable machine tools, lifecycle-oriented machine tools, micro- and precision machining and simulation systems".

Dr Collins added: "Over 40 UK companies will be exhibiting and we are looking forward to demonstrating to Lord Jones first hand the success and strength of the sector, both at home and abroad".

* UK machine tool industry figures - figures just released by the MTA show a healthy growth in the UK's machine tool sector for the first half of 2007.

Imports of metal working machine tools were 20.5% higher than at the same period in 2006 at GBP 275.3million.

For exports, there was a quarter-on-quarter increase of +4.3% in the second period of the year.

Shipments to the European Union were up by 13.5% on in the first quarter of 2006 at GBP 118 million, which was nearly 53% of all exports.

Exports to the rest of the world fell by 14.5% and significantly in deliveries to the USA and China, whilst there was an increase in the value of exports to South Korea and India.

However this has led to a small reduction in UK exports of metal working machine tools of 4.7% at a value of GBP 220.8 million.

Commenting on the figures, MTA Statistician Geoff Noon said: "The underlying increase in imports continues to reflect the strength of the UK market which we have seen over the past 18 months or so, while exports to Europe are also driven by strong demand in those markets.

The dip in exports to China can be accounted for by a number of UK companies setting up joint ventures there, so replacing their exports.

The picture for rest of 2007 in the UK market remains optimistic".

Having attended hundreds of trade shows and exhibitions around the world, Dr Collins has the following hints and tips for getting the most out of a visit to EMO Hannover.

* Plan your route - you can easily wear out a pair of shoes wandering around EMO Hannover.

With 16 exhibition halls each featuring some 100 exhibitors, you can literally walk for days.

The EMO Hannover Web site - www.emo-hannover.de - provides information covering all the exhibitors together with a floor plan for each of the halls and a software program to help you organise your dates.

* Do your homework - visit the show virtually on the internet, before even setting foot in Hannover.

Using the links in the exhibitors database you can list the companies that you want to visit and then group and plot them on the floor plans.

* Be realistic - work on visiting 10 stands in an hour.

If you concentrate on a hall at a time, you should be able to cover a hall in a morning.

A casual visit to the entire EMO Hannover show takes about three days.

* Aim high - with Germany, France and the US accounting for 45% of all UK manufactured exports, EMO Hannover presents a perfect opportunity for reaching companies in these vital mature markets.

The event also attracts strong representation from high - growth markets - both in terms of visitors and exhibitors.

EMO Hannover is organised on behalf of the European Committee for Cooperation of the Machine Tool Industries (CECIMO) by the German Machine Tool Builders' Association (VDW) in cooperation with Deutsche Messe, Hannover.
